THE THREE TYPES OF PUBLIC POLICY

DISCUSSION

There are three main basic types of public policies that were explored in this week’s reading. They include Distributive, Redistributive, and Regulatory. The strategies were developed in various ways, and they also impact our daily life in different ways. Considering the distributive policy, this policy is mainly concerned by the distribution and provision of services to the public. It happened when a local highway was built in a small town in Northern California. The road was established through a tunnel to allow access to the main road that eased congestion and traffic for commuters. The Redistributive policy, on the other hand, deals with fostering equality in terms of an opportunity to the public. It involves a situation when the resources in a society are distributed to various groups who require assistance to economically function effectively.  Lastly, the Regulatory policy mainly limits the discrimination of individuals in a society.  It occurs where the cost is concentrated on a smaller number of people, but the benefits are seen over a larger population.

RESPONSE ONE

The first student acknowledges that bureaucracy has crucial power in the implementation of public policy. He affirms that the president and Congress have the power of determining the final policy to be made to the public despite the two having the same page regarding policy since it is the bureaucracy that implements policies. He furthers explains that bureaucracy has the most vital and more power when it comes to determining are related to or close to one another. He further gives an example of an act, No Child Left behind Act, where the president and Congress passed this law. Still, it was up to the Department of Education and individual states to determine how the policy was going to be followed, where the errors were, and which parts of it were unenforceable. He concludes by posing a question inquiring whether Congress or the president has any say in the implementation of the policy. He answers that they do but in theory and suggest that the founding fathers would argue that they have this power.

RESPONSE TWO

The student identifies the three types of public policies, Distributive, Redistributive, and Regulatory.  He says that all these types of public policies affect us in our everyday life even though we may not notice. He explains that the Distributive policy applied when a local highway was built in a small town in Northern California. The highway was established through a tunnel to allow access to the main highway that eased congestion and traffic for commuters. Although the cost for this highway would have impacted many residents that didn’t use this new tunnel, only a few residents saw the actual benefits of the highway. He then explains that Redistributive Policy is when resources in society are distributed to different to other groups that require help and assistance to function economically. On Regulatory Policy, he says pretty much opposite of what Redistributive policy, where the cost is concentrated on a smaller number of people, but the benefits are seen over a larger population. He gives an example of the environmental issues that were discussed in the week’s teaching.
