1. There has been an increase in the number of twins being born and a later age of marriage in the past decade.

The relationship, in this case, is merely a correlation. The two events: (1) an increase in the number of twins being born and: (2) a later age of marriage in the past decade are independent of each other. Neither of the events causes the occurrence of the other.

2. During the past decade, there has been a decrease in the size of the Greenland ice cap and an increase in the number of twins being born.

This statement is merely a correlation. There is no causal relationship between the number of twins being born and the noticed decrease in the size of the Greenland ice cap in the previous decade. Both premises exist independently, and none leads to the occurrence of the other.

3. People who are members of a religious organization tend to be happier.

This is a causal relationship. The statement implies that there is a connection between jolly and membership to a religious organization. In as much one may be happy without being part of a religious organization, those that ascribe to religious organizations tend to be happier.

4. Sarah drank nine bottles of beer at the party and is having trouble walking straight.

This is a causal relationship. The quantity of alcohol taken has a direct relationship to an individual’s mobility. Alcohol causes alcoholic myopathy, which affects an individual’s muscle fibers. The excess alcohol content in the human body will weaken body muscles, therefore, inhibiting normal body movement.

5. Almost all the animals that could flee to higher ground did so shortly before the tsunami struck Indonesia in 2004.

This is a causal relationship. Scientific theories prove that animals have sensory abilities that enable them to sense the earth’s vibrations. Additionally, they are also able to detect changes in air and sea currents as released by the earth. Therefore this could be the reason why animals were able to flee the 2004 Indonesian Tsunami.

Athlete’s foot thrives in a wet environment, therefore wearing flip-flops protect against an athlete’s foot.

This statement presents a relationship between the wearing of flip-flops and protection against an athlete’s feet. The premise in this statement is: Athlete’s foot thrives in a wet environment, whereas the conclusion in the statement is: wearing flip-flops protect against an athlete’s foot.  The argument is a good argument since athlete’s feet, which is due to fungal infection, thrives in dampened environment such as swimming pools and public showers. Dampen environment promote their growth, and therefore wearing some foot ware will protect an individual from the infection. Thus, the premise in the statement is justified by the successive conclusion.
