‘Betzy Bromberg’s Voluptuous Sleep principles in relation to Pure Cinema.’
Betzy Bromberg’s Voluptuous Sleep is a two-part 16mm meditation film that evokes feelings through poetic manner, sound, and light nuances of a cinema. Through the close-up lens, Bromberg was capable of revealing much of our bodily sensations, just like in the real world. Her sensitivity to light helps in expressing the darkness into light and opening up the world of the unknown. She was capable of combining perfectly matched soundtracks with different images through motions, shapes, and hues, which are filled with different colors and are hard to grasp fully. Just like in a pure cinema or the Absolute films, Voluptuous Sleep is full of mundane actions, perfectly matched soundtracks with an upbeat cadence and graphic composed through visual trickery.
Pure Cinema artistically presents actions through creative editing of images, dissolving, auditory soundtracks, superimposition, and color ambiance to evoke feelings. The blend of visuals in the film helps to create actions where some are pleasant and there transitioning seam seamless, thus resembling those of a pure cinema. There is no dialogue in the movie; therefore, much of it is composed of the ever-flowing stream of images that are in extreme close-up. The lens in the film comes close enough at times according to various subjects to show different details then it blurs it away indicates some cinematic artifice.
The soundtracks also in the two halves differing, but all containing an upbeat cadence shows some principles of a pure cinema. There is the use of strings and electronic droning with an upbeat rhythm, which helps in raising one’s level of sensorial experience. The graphical framework used in the film also through different shapes, motions, and hues of different colors matched with the soundtracks relate to cinema work. Like cinema work, the movie is full of images modified with different colors that beautify it and showing the basics of light and its ability to conceive meaning.
