American State and Local Politics
Just as voting is a legal right for every citizen of legal age, I also do exercise this right. One of the reasons that make me vote is to satisfy the conscience that I have voted for the candidate of my choice so that I do not blame myself in future for not voting in case the elected candidate who might not be my choice makes wrong decisions for the state or nation. Another reason why I vote is that I believe it is an opportunity to make my voice heard. This is to show dissatisfaction with the performance of other leaders whom I might not have the chance to stand before them to express my dissatisfaction. A third reason is to make sure I do not let my friends who hold the same views as mine down (“Voting Behavior,” n.d.). I wouldn’t want them to blame me for failing to vote in case the candidate whom we mutually believe deserves to be elected ends up losing, especially if he loses by a small margin.
However, there are reasons that can make me not to vote. One of the reasons could be if I find that among the contestants, none stands for what I believe should be done. It feels like work in futility to line up to vote for someone whose ideas you do not agree with. Another reason is disillusionment as a result of continued let down by the elected leaders (Hartsoe, 2018). Some leaders fail to stick to the promises they made in their manifestos. In case this pattern repeats itself after every election, one can easily give up on voting. The other reason maybe if I find myself in an area or state where the party whose ideologies I subscribe is not the predominant one. It is almost certain that my vote will not count since it is almost certain that my candidate will lose.
