What elective course you have taken that you would not recommend to other students?
Introduction
It is a general compulsory practice that University
students need to choose an elective unit to satisfy the requirements of the respective program. A lamentation, however, ensues in how much emphasis is given to the criterion of such selections. It is even worse that the units are considered free electives since they don’t reflect in the components of the respective program. The same fate befell me during my pursuit of a degree in broadcasting Journalism.
Broadcasting Journalism-Public relations
During the first year of study of journalism, much emphasis is put on the need to develop relational skills. Students thus ought to take a lot on both personal improvements and understanding of others. Such skills are in those cases affiliated to the need to develop self-esteem while approaching reporting with ethical considerations. While it is essential to develop the skills, less concern is directed towards specialization at the senior classes. As such, it is easier to fall prey to selecting an elective unit based on its input in developing relational skills as a broadcasting journalist. My choice was not exceptional amongst the two that were at my discretion, going for public relations rather than literal studies. I later came to learn that unlike field journalism, where much attention is driven to the public, broadcasting has less to do with handling others. One should thus drive awareness for improving their literal studies.
Conclusion
Little attention is given to the students’ criterion for selecting elective units since they are considered outliers of their programs. As a result, the choices are realized not
to comply with their career objectives. As a broadcasting journalist, more attention should be given to literal studies compared to public relations, as evident from per
sonal experience.
