Interpersonal Theory of Communication
Communication studies impact the student with the knowledge to help them become effective and better leaders in their societies and communities. Communication studies have helped me become a better student as well as become a better person who is able to understand how to present oneself in front of people. Communication studies also play an important part in helping the student identify their self-worth as well as their self-perception because most of the knowledge they attain is through their interactions with others by communicating with them. In addition to this, communication studies assist the student in identifying ways they can improve themselves and those around them through their ability to communicate with others and forming relationships that will impact their lives and students For my undergraduate program, I have taken up two communication studies that will help me graduate in the future. Comm110f and comm172f have positively impacted in my studies at the university. The theories and concepts of communication have helped me develop a deeper understanding of communication. One such concept is interpersonal communication, which has helped me gain a deeper insight into how I am supposed to communicate with people.
The interpersonal theory of communication as a concept of communication focuses on the exchange of ideas and information between people. Also, it seeks to explain how people use verbal and non-verbal cues to communicate with each other effectively. Learning about the interpersonal theory of communication helped me understand how to interpret non-verbal cues while speaking to people. In addition to this, interpersonal theory as a communication concept helps students understand more about relationships and how ‘communication plays a vital role in maintaining relationships. To have a peaceful co-existence with people, I believe that a person should be able to talk and understand people. Also, read the room to identify if there is any tension before raising a topic or issue. Another important thing I learned from the theory is that people tend to understand non-verbal cues more than words, and this plays a part in how to approach a person or communicate with them. My comprehension of the theory has helped me gain an insight into how to read non-verbal cues like gestures and signs to have an effective conversation with people. I love talking to people and having a meaningful discussion that seeks to satisfy my thirst for knowledge, and thus, I believe that the courses I have taken for communication studies have equipped me with the ability to enjoy such conversations.
In the courses I have taken so far on communication studies, the interpersonal theory of communication has helped me have a better understanding of how to communicate with people properly. Communication studies and the courses related to communication help students understand the importance of communicating with each other and the role of communication in a relationship. As students, our relationships are dependent on our abilities to communicate with each other and also how to read the emotional state of people we are conversing with. I believe that the understanding of the interpersonal theory of communication assists learners in reading non-verbal cues such as gestures and signs that help one to communicate without the use of words to communicate. I believe that the courses I have taken that discuss the theory have helped me gain a deeper understanding of how to have an interesting conversation with people. In addition to this, I believe that the course equips the student with the tools to communicate with others for peaceful co-existence effectively.
