Artwork

Art is essential in the natural setting of living because of the arrangement of elements that have emotions and senses from the Renaissance and Medieval period. There are different paintings, sculptures, frescos, mosaics, and other forms of artwork from the best artists of that period. The discussion exhumes an example of Renaissance period art, stating its name, name of the artist, properties of the artwork, medium and material used to complete the art, and its dimensions.

Renaissance was the period between the 14th and 17th centuries in Europe, which involved the production of art and literature. One example of the Renaissance period art is The Mona Lisa. It is a painting that was done by Leonardo da Vinci, who is regarded as one of the High Renaissance Artist. Mona Lisa was a model and the Wife of Francesco del Giocodo, who owned a successful silk and Cloth merchant. The painting was done in Florence, Italy, during the 16th century. The Mona Lisa painting was painted in 1503, making it 517 years old today (Isaacson, 2019). The original dimension of the art was 77cm X 53 cm and is currently placed in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

The Mona Lisa painting used the Renaissance style of art. Leonardo expresses humanism through the picture. The painting represents the humanist ideas of dignity and realism, utilizing the simplicity of painting.  The backgrounds of the painting represent the love for nature through grasses and mountainous landscape, which shows the naturalism rebirth and love of humanity in their natural form (Visual-arts-cork.com, 2019). The painting shows the Renaissance style through the depiction of religious themes, which fainted during the end of the Medieval period, and the beginning of the Renaissance period. The painting, therefore, represents the Renaissance art style through Greece and Roman expression, which captures the experience, beauty, individualism, and natural world of the environment.

Leonardo used unique materials and medium when he was painting the Mona Lisa. He used oil during painting on a piece of wood, which was from a trunk of poplar.  It uses poplar wood, unlike most paintings that are done on canvas, makes it a unique art. He perfected sfutamo, which is a painting technique referring to “vanished or evaporated” (Visual-arts-cork.com, 2019). The method used softening colors, and he added dark glazes on the edges (Rotgans, 2015). Leonardo combined partly discolored paint in the layers of painting, which include white, yellow, red, blue, and dark pigments, to contrast shadow and light. Therefore, Leonardo made the painting of Mona Lisa represented the fading of smoke in the air.

Therefore, the decision to choose the Mona Lisa painting is due to its uniqueness and familiarity in the world. The first usage of a wood painting by Leonardo makes it an exciting piece to study. The art is also the most valuable in the world, indicating that it is one of a kind. The most exciting thing in the painting is the mischievous smile Leonardo portrays, which combines the happiness of humanism and nature.

Conclusively, the Renaissance period of art was essential, indicating the end of the medieval period. During this period, one of the famous paintings to be done was Mona Lisa by Leonardo di Vinci in the 16th century. The art is unique because of the portrait nature of the lady, medium and materials used such as wood and oil painting, the use of sfutamo (resembling fading smoke). The art also represents humanism and naturalism style of the Renaissance art period. That uniqueness of the painting has made it the most expensive, attracting different tourists globally to see it in the Louvre Museum in France.
