President Trump union address speech on February 4th, 2020
Major points delivered by President Trump in his union address speech on February 4th, 2020 included past and current achievements, economic development, political unity, healthcare, illegal immigration, intellectual property, security, and national defense. The U.S.U.S. House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, was present alongside other members such as Veronica Escobar (Texas Representative), Ayanna Pressley, Rep. Bill Pascrel. Under the U.S.U.S. senate, we had Senator Bernie Sanders, among others. Supreme Court attendees included Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch (L) and Supreme Justice Brett Kavanaugh, other invited dignitaries.
The major theme in President Trump’s address was about the American people. He wanted the Americans to choose greatness, and work together towards a common good without letting political parties, Republican and Democrat, divide them.
Trump described a number of challenges that the U.S.U.S. had experienced in the past year. Some of the problems he mentioned included; illegal immigration, increased crime, women’s sexual harassment, death of innocent Americans from lethal drugs, child cancer, attacks from illegal immigrants and terrorist groups like ISIS, theft of intellectual property by Chinese people among others.
The president addressed two crucial anniversaries and accomplishments made under his administration. He described the Great Crusade, Allied liberation of Europe in World War II, and the planting of the American flag in the moon. He acknowledged that during the 20th century, America achieved a lot by transforming science, redefining the middle class, and saving freedom. Under his leadership, Trump recognized various achievements such as; economic development, creation of 5.3 million jobs, raised wages, reduced unemployment rate, massive tax cut, ended estate tax, reducing regulations, unleashing Americans’ energy, stopped illegal border crossings at San Diego, among others.
In this coming here, priorities that Donald Trump laid out include; embracing cooperation, common good and compromise, healing old wounds, choosing greatness, ending crisis at the southern border, construction of wall to prevent illegal immigrants, stopping China from stealing America’s intellectual property and industries, lowering the costs of healthcare and prescription drugs, development of infrastructure, protecting patients who have got pretexting conditions and fighting against childhood cancer (2020 State of the Union speech, 2020).
In the entire speech, Trump never mentioned anything to do with his impeachment hearings. I have a positive reaction towards his State of the Union Address. Trump acted as a president who is highly concerned with both the current and future lives of the Americans. He is more than determined to improve Americans economically, politically, and socially, and enable them to work towards the common good. Indeed, Trump is a futuristic president who deserves another term in office.
In the current impeachment hearings, which took place in the U.S.U.S. House of representatives, charges labeled against Trump were an abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The impeachment process started at the House of Representatives, where the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, held that Trump had violated the oath of his office. She facilitated the voting process in the house, where they held that Trump was guilty as charged and impeached. The two articles of impeachment were forwarded to the Senate for trials (Keneally, 2020). At the Senate, the impeachment process was led by the Speaker, and the outcome was that Trump was acquitted the charges against him (Wilkie and Breuninger, 2020).
In my opinion, Trump’s charges could have been acquitted at the House of Representatives, and could not have reached the senate stage. Nancy Pelosi, the House Speaker, influenced the representatives to vote against Trump, as she hates him. The Senate made the right decision of not impeaching Trump, as there was no adequate information in support of the same.
