components of a curriculum and its development in the modern educational system
Hi penny,
It is great to see you highlight the components of a curriculum and its development in the modern educational system. The type of curriculum indeed has an influence on the acquisition of knowledge and skills. It depends on the teaching and learning methods that are outlined in a different curriculum. The curriculum should accommodate all the needs of all learners, whether slow learners or fast learners, for equity in learning in all students. In my opinion, the response that your teacher gave to the student who hated math is not appealing. A student should only learn things that are beneficial to them concerning what they want to be in life. It is a waste of time and resources teaching student skills and knowledge that he will not use in his life. However, the curriculum should conceptualize the themes of education to show us the different ways we can think about education.
Hi Emily,
Your reflection of the week’s reading is excellent. An effective curriculum should have five basic orientations, as outlined by Eisner. It helps people to analyze different educational objectives that have been used in designing the curriculum. From the cognitive perspective, a curriculum should improve student’s critical thinking, mastery of concepts, and ability to solve problems. A teacher should provide guidelines to a learner to enable them to learn on their own without the teacher. I agree with you about the example of a teacher-centered teaching method that you have illustrated. Teaching should help the learners to learn different ways but not just imparting knowledge to them. A curriculum should allow the learner to conceptualize, analyze, solve problems to find appropriate resources, and evaluate their outcomes. A curriculum should address the physical, mental, spiritual, and intellectual health of the learner. The learners should be encouraged to make meaningful contributions to their lives.
