General Psych: Corporal Punishment
Over the years, spanking children has been used as a way of discipline and has been shared among Americans. During the first periods of the modern century, nearly 68% of parents were spanking their kids, especially in lower socioeconomic status, dual parenting households. Many kids are spanked, from lower ages, as little as three years onwards, and studies indicate parents admit the act within the last three days of surveying (Berger, 2016).
Corporal Punishment Controversy
Despite the act instilling discipline on the kids for many generations, it has presently turned to extremes that need controlling and regulations. Parents are using inhumane ways to punish kids, leading to abuse and violation of children’s rights. It results in negative development, continuous fear on the kids, pulling back, sullen moods, and emotions are negatively affected. On the extreme side, it could lead to the development of depression among young kids. Some parents use metal rods to punish kids, resulting in wounds, blisters, and swollen body organs, which affects the health of the child.
My position on the topic regarding spanking is that the act should not be encouraged and allowed. It has to be abolished because its positive results do not last. The act might fix indiscipline behavior in the short-term, but in the end, it leads to psychological torture making the child become more aggressive, repulsive, and unruly. Behavior change requires building trust between the parent and child, and discipline can involve other humane ways, apart from corporal spanking. . A person holding a different opinion from the one stated above could argue that the immediate effect or fixing is ideal in dealing with bad behaviors among kids. Other disciplinary methods take time to bring results and may delay the fixing process. It is also easy and doesn’t require professional training to handle and discipline kids.
If I were a parenting specialist, the advice I would propose to a new parent about the best ways of handling and disciplining their kids is creating time, and not being manipulative or using extreme force while spanking them.Parents should reward good behavior that kids show and explain why bad behavior is not accepted in society. As a way to punish, they can take away some privileges, for instance, the child not watching television to complete homework that was not previously done.
