Costco VS Sam’s Club
Sam’s Club previously rolled out an iteration scan and Go app in 2013, that required customers to scan the bar code of their item – with their smartphones and pay directly within the app instead of using the self-checkout lane (Jalbert et al., 2019). This means that Sam’s Club employees have full access to Touch ID fingerprint scanner, which speed up transactions, increase security, and improve in-store shoppers experience. However, Sam’s Club warehouse competitor Costco, believe that employees could do a better job. In 2013, Costco announced plans to eliminate self-checkout – POS- after test led management to view self-checkout as a threat to cashier performance. In this spirit, the CEO of Costco, W. Craig Jelinek, also employed non-rewards cash to inspires its employees to be productive and believe in themselves. Costco’s most compelling reason for using intrinsic motivation was/, and it’s still purely based on efficacy.
Recent studies showed that promotion opportunities are just as effective as cash rewards, if not more (Kuvaas et al., 2017). The authors revealed that promotion incentives motivate employees better than cash rewards. In other words, intrinsic are powerful tools in retaining green talents, evoking employee engagement, decision, and loyalty. Generally, intrinsic is associated with recognition, experience, promoting self-esteem, and boosting camaraderie among the team. In this spirit, it clear that recognition in the form of promotion opportunities is critical, and Costco is a believer in creating this form of intrinsic motivation rather than offering cash rewards like Sam’s Club. Simply, Sam’s Club needs to realize that its 3X cash rewards are not always kings when it comes to rewarding and incentivizing its employees. In fact, this difference is what makes Costco more and more likely to retain green talents and improve employee performance in the warehouse club, and Sam’s club less likely to inspire their employees to become productive..
