Christian means being Christ-like and therefore just like Christ, Christians should work towards achieving excellence in all that they do. In His work of ministry, Jesus Christ was always oriented to do that which was good in order to please the Father who had sent Him. John writes, “He who sent me is in me. He has not left me alone, because I always do His will” (John 8:29). Therefore, Christians should seek to pursue excellence for God created them to excel for the honor and glory of His mighty name. There are three ways that pushes a Christian to achieve excellence such as the personal commitment to pursue Christian values, motivation, and imitation.
The desire to pursue Christian values drives one to achieve excellence. Peter in 2 Peter 1:3-11, he elaborates that God has given us all the values and traits which are necessary for living a Godly and excellence oriented life. From verse 5-7, he further motivates us to make every effort to supplement our faith with excellence coupled with other Christian values such as brotherly love, endurance, self-control, and godliness. These values will guide us to achieve excellence in writing; brotherly love will help us acknowledge the fact that it is important to cite work borrowed from other authors as a way of crediting them for the good work done, endurance will be key in ensuring we follow all instructions to detail, self-control will help us avoid plagiarism and write in our own words rather than copying and pasting, and lastly godliness will guide us in presenting excellent piece of writing in order to please our instructors as well as our heavenly father.
Motivation has a great influence to our goals as well as our value system. Faith motivates us to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength as well as to love our neighbors as we love ourselves (Mark 12:30-31). These two priorities for a Christian will determine how they do their work. If we love our brothers and sisters in Christ as we love ourselves, then we will strive to achieve excellence in writing by citing work borrowed from other authors, being creative and writing in our own words, and being attentive while writing in order to present a good work that will please the readers as well as God the creator. In 1 Corinthians 13:1-3, Apostle Paul demonstrates love as the key source of motivation for doing that which is good. Further in Colossians 3:22-24, Apostle Paul encourages Christians to devote themselves in all that they do as if working for God and not to be seen and praised by human masters.. God created us in His image and likeness, and therefore as Christians we should strive to be like Him. In Ephesians 5:1, Paul writes, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children”. God has called us to imitate Him and to be as perfect as He is (Matthew 5:48). In writing, Christians should strive to be perfect in order to achieve excellence for the honor and glory of God the father. Perfection in writing will be depicted by avoiding plagiarism, citing work from other authors, following instructions to detail, and submitting a presentable final copy that will not only please the human master but also God the father for the honor and glory of His mighty name. By His grace, we received the spirit of sonship to be like Him and be the light of the world and shine for His glory. We are therefore called to illuminate the world with our good deeds for others to see and give praises to our heavenly father (Matthew 5:14-16)
