Fromm’s basic assumptions and the dichotomy of life and death
According to Fromm, human beings have leveraged on the ability to reason because they have failed to adapt to a dynamic world and disengaged from their prehistoric union with nature in what Fromm calls human dilemma. One example of an existential dichotomy is the fact that life ends with death. However, the reason is used to cater for the fact that humans cannot adapt to death by extending life. As a result, reason sets in and the explanation is used to make people temporarily feel better about their selves and have hope of life after death. My thoughts are that Fromm’s view is accurate in his reflection of the human dilemma. The power to reason is the measure of last resort when we can no longer explain what is beyond our abilities.
How modern technology has affected caused basic anxiety
Current technological advancements have resulted in significant benefits, but at the same time, they have affected human attachment to nature and each other. A disconnection with nature affects the way we perceive and appreciate our environment and our lives. Individualistic tendencies, coupled with technology and a lack of connection with nature, has facilitated the rise of basic anxiety. A common phenomenon is the use of smartphones by adolescents and teenagers. Today we move away from each other to achieve independence and perfectionism. We move towards each other for approval and to seek affection from dominant partners, and we move against each other for prestige, admiration and power. This causes young people to isolate themselves by moving away from people so that they can live in a virtual world instead of the real world. Also, people are interacting more with machines than nature which affects their wellbeing and a sense of connection to nature.
