Elizabeth Warren Quits the Democratic Party Nomination race.
Massachusetts senator represents a progressive wing of the party that may, from now on, favor Bernie Sanders.
Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts state senator who was runing for the Democratic Party’s primary election as a representative of a progressive wing alternative to Bernie Sanders, announced her official withdrawal from the race on Thursday.
The news was released this afternoon by the New York Times and the candidate will address her supporters within a few hours to inform them of her decision.
Warren’s withdrawal is the 4th in the past few days and leaves the race free for just two candidates : Bernie Sanders, as the representative of the progressive wing, to the left; and Joe Biden, a favorite of the centrist constituency and Democratic Party leadership.
The wave of withdrawals began on Sunday with the announcement of Pete Buttigieg , the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, whose campaign appealed more to the center of the party. A day later, another representative of that centrist constituency, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar, also announced her withdrawal . And on Wednesday, it was time for multimillionaire Michael Bloomberg to leave the race .
Buttigieg and Klobuchar left after poor results in South Carolina last Saturday and declared their support for Joe Biden, who won the primaries in that state by a wide margin . Bloomberg’s decision was announced after the results of “super Tuesday” , which did not confirm his investment of more than $ 500 million in the campaign.
The voting results in 14 states and an American territory on Tuesday also called into question the future of Elizabeth Warren’s candidacy – if Biden begins to bring together the electorate from the center that was spread among him, Buttigieg, Klobuchar and Bloomberg, Senator Bernie Sanders has always had majority support in the left wing of the party. On Tuesday, Warren did not win a single vote and came in 3rd place in his own state , Massachusetts, behind Biden and Sanders.
On Wednesday, Elizabeth Warren’s campaign director, Roger Lau, said the senator was evaluating her future in the race and would announce a decision “soon”.
“This decision is in their hands, and it is important that they have time and space to evaluate the next steps,” said Lau, in a text in which he acknowledged the “disappointment” with Tuesday’s results.
“Elizabeth believes in her ideas and the structural change that is needed to end corruption in Washington, and will decide how best to achieve those ideas,” concluded the campaign director .
