Film Analysis: Warm Bodies

The modern adaptations of Rome and Juliet have incorporated various aspects of modernity and culture that makes it relevant to contemporary society. The warm film bodies, for instance, contains a hidden expression of undying love that is witnessed between two individuals of a different world. In this case, the love is seen between a zombie(R), falls in love with Julie, a human, and daughter to a doctor. The film continues to show how the flow of events contribute to strengthening the relationship between a Zombie and a human (Hogarth). Progressively, the Zombie nolonger feels the urge to drink blood and begins feeling human again. From this plot of the film, the director is aiming at depicting the Romeo and Juliet Kind of love that would cure vampirism. This can be seen through the changes in the skin colour for R, and he infects other zombies around him as they gradually acquire hearts, and they become human once more.

One of the most notable changes that can be seen in Warm bodies is the incorporation of the Zombie apocalypse in the plot. Shakespeare play is about two families that are at loggerheads, and yet from the two, comes a great love that lives along even in death. In the modern representation, however, this changes as the rivalry are seen between the humans and the Zombies, and similar to Shakespeare’s play, it is a matter of life and death (Levenson). The film Warm bodies take a different turn of events because the meeting between R and Julie is stationed at a time when R is out to kill and as heartless as he is, he does not pounce on Julie but instead moves closer and observes her. Making these changes in this modern depiction of Rome of Juliet was essential in meeting the aesthetic expectations of the contemporary society. Ideally, the aspect of arranged marriages no longer exists; however, there are science experiments that might go wrong to create illnesses that most directors express through vampirism.

One outstanding feature that has remained the same throughout the film is the depiction of a considerable amount of love. Ideally, Shakespeare’s play was intended at showing the world that there can exist a great deal of respect that cannot be stopped by war or even death. Similarly, this concept of love has been carried forward in the film Warm Bodies (Hogarth). Additionally, the aspects of barriers to love is also evident in the two works of literature. For instance, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet presents the families and arranged marriages as barriers.  In the Warm Bodies, on the other hand, the director expresses the attack of the Boneys. I believe that leaving these aspects in the modern versions of Romeo and Juliet is essential in maintaining its originality. There is no way one can identify these films as a Romeo and Juliet version if they did not project the central theme of love..
