Mock Interview Alternative Assignment

Question 1

My job title is a construction manager, dealing with various logistical and planning aspects and other functions at the construction sites. My interest in the position of the construction manager is grounded on the belief that I have requisite skills and expertise needed to effectively help the organization in realizing its goals and objectives as far as effective construction management is concerned. Again, since childhood, I have had a passion for managing construction sites, and I have nurtured the dream of managing one of the successful construction projects. Therefore, I feel the chance to assume the role of the construction manager offers me an opportune time to assist the organization in realizing its objectives as well as accords me an opportunity to realize my long-held dreams.

Question 2

One of my weaknesses is that I am a perfectionist, and I often pay attention to details on a project to the extent that it can jeopardize the completion deadlines of the project. When I was working as an intern at Han’s Construction Company, I experienced challenges accepting that most projects were fined tuned into detail. In this regard, I would insist on spending more time in polishing the projects, an aspect that weighed on the set timeframes. However, to address the shortcoming, I have learned the importance of completing projects as stipulated within a given time-frame and working closely with the management and the team in the working within the scope dictated by the timeframe. Again, I have learned several aspects that revolve around finding the balance between being perfect and meeting the deadlines of the projects, accepting that there exists room for learning and improvement continuously..

Question 7

One challenge that I have encountered is building a relationship with team members and getting compelled to work with other individuals who have different working ethics and behavior from mine. When I was at Hans Construction Company as an intern, I was not accustomed to working and interacting with so many team members. Additionally, what typified the working relationship was constant communication, consultations, and performing a task as a unit. Since I was not so much accustomed to working in such contexts, I found it relatively hard to adapt. However, I got out of the situation by accepting the individual differences and giving prominence to what the organization expected of the team. I followed by the gradual development of a strong working relationship.

Question 8

Before I attend an interview, I give prominence to three steps in days preceding the interview with an organization or a booked appointment. First, I research about the organization and the job position I have applied. If it is an interview that involves a client, I often research about any probable projects that the client might be interested on. The second step is ensuring that my professional documents such as resume and relevant certification are in place and that the information I have provided reflects what is in the relevant professional documents. The third step that I give prominence is honing my communication skills and body language, taking into account the role played by the first impression and presentation.

Question 11

If there is any situation that I could have handled differently or could have changed is my encounter with a client who was difficult to handle. Again, when I was at Hans Construction Company, I got into an encounter with a client who dictated all the undertakings related to the construction. The client had difficulty understanding the basic concepts and regulations that exist in the construction industry. Therefore, some of his demands were not only contravening the essential construction regulations but were also unrealistic. In response, I directed the client to my supervisor, who, in a seemingly simple way, highlighted the regulations under the construction industry and the jargon associated with construction. Such instance did not only leave me self-critical about my ability to effectively deal with problematic clients but also exposed my inexperience to the team members and the supervisor. Therefore, if I were to handle the situation or remedy it in the contemporary moment, I would have used simple terms and highlighted the essential regulations in the construction industry devoid of jargon and other terminologies that the client understood. I still believe that effective communication could have been pivotal in addressing the concerns of the client.

Question 14

One regrettable mistake that I made in the past was engaging in an argument with a colleague and took everything relatively personal. During my time at Hans Construction Company, roles were assigned to us in selected groups to foster the aspect of teamwork among the workers. However, in these groups of two people where we were placed, my partner and I hardly agreed on various issues. Our divergent opinions on issues, as well as lack of understanding of matters pertaining to how a project could be handled, worsened the relationship between us. Occasionally, we could be engrossed in prolonged arguments that further exacerbated the already strained relationship, prompting both of us to perceive that all these problems were personal. Such development was a grave mistake in an organization that valued teamwork and prompt resolution of conflicts. To remedy the situation, I issued an apology to the management and the team member. Further, I accepted the individual differences between us and created room for divergent opinion and the fact that the perfectionist approach could be detrimental to a working relationship. Consequently, during our continued working as a team, we managed to meet deadlines promptly, have a great working relationship, and contributed to meeting the organization’s goals and objectives regarding most of its projects.
