Case Study: give and Take

  1. In my own opinion, I do not think the Harley deal was one-sided. Based on this particular situation, the parties involved sacrificed and benefitted from the agreement that was put in place. However, Harley had the option of shutting down the plant, the, move all staff members to Kentucky, whereby a better and more lucrative deal could have been made or occurred for their mutual benefit. Similarly, the union received a significant boost of seven-years subjected to the staff members who worked fulltime. The safety of seven-years happened at a time when a good number of devastating kind of jobs had no proper protection (Liao et al., 2019). Through factory modernization, some essential benefits were gained. One of the most vital interests involved the opening of more advanced and safe jobs offered to all employees. These jobs were generated through factory modernization, whereby they did not exist previously.
  2. I would vote for the presented deal due to its effects in the long-run. By agreeing and saying yes, the majority of individuals would significantly benefit based on the agreement. If at all the deal would not have been effectively approved, a great chance would exist where people would lose their jobs and the business would shut down. In my position, I would instead work as a “casual” staff member and stay at home than move my family to a different town and begin a new kind of life. However, focusing on The Walls Street Journal-based article, “Moving for a certain job” it is explained that there are many factors to be considered apart from the job itself especially if relocating the entire family is involved (Mantel, 2015). One of the essential element to consider is if your family agrees with you to transfer. An individual must make sure he or she is relocating to a place that is a more desirable way beyond the job. A good example falls where the family needs to understand the cost of living as soon as they arrive at their new destination and make sure the cost of living is affordable. All families need to be aware of their new premises. Various factors are supposed to be considered by an individual when moving away. It is a crucial step to put these factors on paper and find them one by one. In the case presented, an employee needs to figure out what he or she wants to have a successful career and have significant advancements in life.
  3. Personally, it is very appropriate for the state of government to participate actively and have an important role focused on managing negotiations in the union. The government should act as the people’s voice. For the government to take the role of people’s view, it needs to be part of the mediation sector concerned with the deal (Handsome, 2016). Moreover, government input entities are valuable to such an extent that its involvement is very appropriate in this particular case. Negotiations that involve union-management are vital when it comes to making crucial decisions that might affect the well-being of individuals. All government bodies have the responsibility of taking active participation in matters that might affect the social, physical, and economic safety of employees. The government needs to have direct involvement in deals that are very important to ensure maximum safety.
