The Javanese court dance

A dance refers to an art of performance that consists of sequences of body movements that are purposefully selected. The purpose of a dance is to maintain our culture, to maintain our ties, to share our culture with our children, and show them how crucial our culture is. The choreographer should choose the best location for a dance performance, which will offer the audience an exciting attending experience. The lights and costumes to be used in a dance should be conscious, specific, and distinct to support the intentions of the choreographer and to enable the audience to discover for themselves the meaning of the dance as the performance progresses. Below is a discussion of two different types of dances that were performed by different dancers with different intentions.

The Javanese court dance

In the Javanese court dance, we see beautiful young women dancing. They are indistinguishably dressed as royal brides.  Their movements are deliberate, controlled, and refined. In their simultaneous motion, the dancers become one. This marks an altruistic act which is a celebration that the Javanese value a lot in their day to day activities. According to the Javanese culture, it is wrong for a dancer to become better than the rest of the dancers. The extravagant dance, the elegant dancers, the colorful dancing costumes, the magical music, and the pendopo stage create a combination that is perfect and incomparable. The dancers’ ideal goal is to attain a balance between the body and the soul.

The Javanese court dance represents the Javanese culture as it comprises of ideals of decorum, order, and beauty, which is basically what the culture is all about.  Additionally, it teaches people that no matter who they are or where they live, they are all heirs to an aristocracy of movement, implying that this is not just a dance, but an expression of moral lessons, emotions, and the Javanese culture.

Waltz of the Snowflakes (The Hard Nut)

In the “Hard Nut” by Morris, the faces of the snowflakes are filled with joy and happiness, portraying how a love that is forbidden can bring out positivity and delightfulness. Their dramatized body movements show their ability to use emotions to equate excitement and joy, which is their ideal message to their audience.

The mode of the dance displayed in the “hard nut” is contemporary as opposed to the versions of the dance displayed in the Nutcracker that is the Classical Ballet versions. “A contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements, Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floor work, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre often done in bare feet “(Ritchie & Brooker, 2018). This style of dance enables the dancers to be free in their movements and expressions, thus allowing them to display their emotions in various forms. The dancers broadcast their message and what they are feeling more effectively and efficiently by emoting all through. The extravagant dance, the elegant dancers,  the dancers’ facial expressions, the colorful dancing costumes, the magical music, the high-class movements, and props such as snow display all the differences that love can comprise of and how influences from the outside can affect the energy of love. The dance is a perfect representation of the gay culture of the US as it depicts various trials of a love that was forbidden in the US.

Conclusively, dances majorly help to express ones’ emotions and represent the culture of a particular community, as explained above. Additionally, the use of distinct costumes and lighting in a dance enables the audience to understand the message that is being relayed with ease.
