COMMUNICATION COMPETENCE

Introduction

The annotated bibliography aims at identifying the critical role played by communication competence in the healthcare industry. As such, a relationship between communication and performances by the nurses would be developed as a strategic approach to managing healthcare problems (Włoszczak-Szubzda & Jarosz, 2013). Also, the annotated bibliography provides a deep insight into the use of modern developments in technology as a means of improving communication between healthcare providers. Such platforms are increasingly being used to spur information sharing between relevant stakeholders, such as the nurses in the healthcare industry. The structure follows the recommended guidelines while writing in APA format with proper citations. For every annotation, a comprehensive summary based on the research findings is provided while outlining the target audience in each context.

The article outlines the importance of communication and coordination while providing healthcare services to the elderly. As such, the authors stipulate the need to improve strategic approaches to communication while transiting the senior groups from nursing homes to their respective hospitals (Kirsebom, Wadensten & Hedström, 2013). The research bases its research on communication difficulties experienced while discharging patients to help avert such problems in the future. The authors state that communication between healthcare staff has been recognized as the most critical element while discharging patients to help avert the already existing problems. Also, the study shows that the communication process is usually complex, with no existing theory to support the hypothesis. In addition, the study finds it difficult to carry out transfers and admissions from hospitals to different nursing homes in case of deteriorated health conditions (Kirsebom, Wadensten & Hedström, 2013). Hence, the research provides a critical role played by communication competence to address the numerous challenges faced throughout the process. The research findings show that nursing homes find it difficult to advocate for elderly people to be transferred to hospitals from nursing homes. The findings show that registered nurses halt premature discharges due to a lack of clear communication. Therefore, a conclusion is drawn on the need to improve coordination and communication between nursing and hospitals. The research target audience consists of nursing homeowners and registered hospital nurses. The study tries to improve communication between the two as a precautionary measure needed to address the health concerns of the elderly.

Koivunen, M., Niemi, A., & Hupli, M. (2015). The use of electronic devices for communication with colleagues and other healthcare professionals–nursing professionals’ perspectives. Journal of advanced nursing71(3), 620-631.

The authors argue that professional experiences in nursing are required while using electronic forms of communication between healthcare professionals and fellow colleagues. As such, the research has a background in the application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) relative to its application in the healthcare sector (Koivunen, Niemi & Hupli, 2015). Besides, the authors stipulate that electronic communication poses numerous advantages to the nursing sector through the use of useful tools found on the internet. Furthermore, the study shows that electronic communication leads to active participation by the nurses while developing networks aimed at improving their practice. As such, consultations have been fastened to improve service delivery to patients in dire needs of medical attention. The research findings show that nursing professionals deploy a wide range of electronic communication to promote idea-sharing. The study shows that most professionals in nursing use emails to share information through a consultative approach (Koivunen, Niemi & Hupli, 2015). Also, the findings stipulate that electronic gadgets used in nursing help improve competencies while managing daily nursing tasks to spur the management of patient’s data. Based on the findings, the authors concluded that the use of technological devices supports communication with different stakeholders in the healthcare sector. However, numerous obstacles hinder health professionals from competently articulating patient’s well-being concerns (Koivunen, Niemi & Hupli, 2015). Health professionals are the research’s intended audience due to their continued use of electronic communication. Healthcare professionals continuously utilize electronic communication as an engagement tool to grow their competence in their service delivery.

Song, H. S., Choi, J., & Son, Y. J. (2017). The relationship between professional communication competences and nursing performance of critical care nurses in South Korea. International journal of nursing practice23(5), e12576.

The authors outline the need for a cordial relationship between competencies required in professional communication relative to performances in nursing. The article provides an insight into critical care given by nurses based in South Korea (Song, Choi & Son, 2017). As such, the authors stipulate that ineffective communication negatively impacts service delivery, with high mortality rates being the most likely outcome. The article’s main ideas include the need to improve communication competence to foster clinical performances among the care nurses. Also, the authors stipulate that communication competence to the ICU nurses relates to personal terms such as age, education, and monthly salary. Hence, the study provides vital evidence required by nurse educators to enable them to develop strategies aimed at improving communication competence among the nurses. The authors stipulate that promoting communication stands to improve clinical performance together with the safety precautions needed in the care setting (Song, Choi & Son, 2017). Moreover, the study exemplifies the need to investigate the nurses’ sociodemographic backgrounds to foster the development of effective communication skills to the health providers. The research findings show that critical nursing performance predictors could only be found using the hierarchical regression analysis relative to the nurses’ communication competences. So, based on the findings, the authors conclude that training on communication skills should be provided as a practical tool to improve performance in nursing. The authors pose nurses’ as the intended audience due to their sensitive role in apprehending patients’ safety. The nurses require communication competence to guarantee therapeutic outcomes on the patient based on their fundamental role in providing long-term quality care.

Recommendations

I recommend that for the continuous improvement of the medical care plans to reduce the risks of quack medical treatments, which would be detrimental to individual health. Hence, the medical plans stand to minimize unnecessary transfers due to problems caused by miscommunications (Satu et al., 2013). Besides, I endorse the development of competent nursing care through the use of electronic communication to spur information sharing needed to address healthcare concerns in a more efficient manner. Also, nursing competency models should be utilized to ensure that every health sector adheres to professional communication needed to improve service delivery relative to patients’ needs (Garside & Nhemachena, 2013). So, medical teams should collaborate with each other to meet the high demands in clinical responsibilities.
