Eye contact is an essential aspect of communication
When someone mentions anything to do with communication, most of us always think that communication happens when you talk to someone or writing them a message. Most of us do not think actively about nonverbal cues that are very much part of how people perceive our chosen messages. In this case, the main types of nonverbal communication cues that I will focus on while doing observation are the gestures that people make during communication, the way we interpret things physically, and the appearance of the people, among others.
On January 30th, 2020, I did my observation, where I observed two people by the name Anton and Andeng. The observation took place at Terras Villa, a local restaurant. I began my observation 9:00 P.m to 1:30 A.m. For me to carry out my observation in an efficient way, I had to commit myself and serve the table next to them for me to observe them carefully.
The best thing is that they could not notice me quickly since the restaurant is fitted with dim lights making the place to be more quiet and intimate. The background noise was filled with a piece of cool music, which made the couples have their best time ever.
Among the two people, both of them were my friends, but it happened that Adeng was my girlfriend, but she left me for Anton because I was broke.
But the fact is, she claimed that Anton was just a friend to her. So, on this day, I had a clue that they were going for a date in a restaurant where I do work, and I decided to go and observe their behaviors without their knowledge. During my observation, I could observe many times of laughter between the two, and there were no negative expressions. Apart from laughter, I also observed the tone which Anton was using. For me to observe all this, I had to walk closely by their table several times throughout the night. Anton had a deep, gentle voice that stayed at a relatively steady low volume throughout their dinner.
Anton was speaking fairly fast, but I think the reason why he spoke like this is because he was excited to be with Adeng. He tried to fit Adeng as much as he could. Also, his laughter was low and hearty, but he used the same volume, which he started with. This man also used a lot of hand gestures while speaking to Adeng. For the far I observed Anton, most of his stories were filled with help from his hands and arms. He was quite animated, and he also looked so excited when talking to Adeng. According to my observation, there was a time I observed his gestures, and at some point, it seemed as if he was describing something like a house using his hand gestures.
Another nonverbal observation that Anton was using during their dinner dates is his posture. He generally sat as if he was bending on the table, and he rarely sat straight. His posture suggested that he wanted to be as closer as possible to Adeng.
The nonverbal observation which I made about Adeng is that she seemed to be so happy with that guy. I also observed how she had dressed. She had worn a very short skirt with a light blue stripe. She had worn high heeled shoes that matched with her white sweater top. The outfit she had worn suggested that she had planned for that dinner date for a long time since it seemed to be one of her special events in her lifetime. Just like Anton, it appeared that this young lady was so much excited to have such a moment with Anton. Her facial expression could tell how happy she was to hear the stories her partner was telling her. It seemed that she loved the house that his partner was describing for her. The young lady also portrayed good interaction with her friend. She maintained eye contact as they were having fun and also gave Anton her hand to shake for the agreement they made. After that, they woke up and started dancing. The way they were holding each other at that moment portrayed both of them were couples. In that restaurant, there was enough space that allowed excellent communication within the people. According to my observation, Anton and Andeng acted very intimately.
The man acted very romantically to the girl in such a way that he was dancing while holding her waist. Most of the people who were present in that restaurant had dressed casually. Most especially, the dressings of the ladies were lovely. The way the ladies had dressed did not affect the way their men were treating them. During my observation, I did not find anyone who was not attractive in that restaurant. All of them looked gorgeous, and they were all treated in the right way. According to how they behaved, all of them looked like couples. When I observed Anton and Andeng while dancing, there reached a time when the two couples requested one of the waiters to bring alcohol on their table, they began drinking, and it could clearly show they enjoyed their dinner date. When they became drunk, they started behaving awkwardly.
The alcohol brought an aggressive behavior where they started talking loudly, and also they started behaving weird in such a way that they started kissing in front of other people.
In conclusion, in any communication that Anton and Andeng were having, they made sure that they maintained eye contact. Eye contact is an essential aspect of communication.
For example, in the relationship between Anton and Andeng, you could clearly see that the couple loved each other due to how they expressed themselves. They felt good and comfortable while talking to each other, and all this was brought due to eye contact. When you are communicating with your friend, and there is no eye contact, that means that you don’t want the person you are speaking with, to know too much about you. Eye contact plays a significant role during communication since it builds trust between the people. In this case, if you are talking to a person who is maintaining the eye contact, he or she is likely to respect and trust you since eye contact indicates the openness in communication.
