CASE STUDY: TWO MOMS

            The present paper is a case study of “Two Moms.” The case entails a teacher in the second grade who communicates a controversial phenomenon, which leads to the parents complaining to the principal.

Part I and II

The reasoning and the way Ms. Ribiero handles the “two moms” scenario, tells a lot about her. The assumptions that can be made is that she has exemplary communication skills, and is intelligent. Ms. Ribiero, outstanding communication skills, is evident in that she notices the actions of Julia and Brandon towards Demise. Additionally, she comes up with a strategy to assist the students in learning novel social skills- understanding the differences of people in the community, and it is okay for the differences to exist. Undertakings such as researching for a highly recommended book and seeking consent from Denise’s parents portray that Ms. Ribiero is intelligent.

Part III

The grave problem-bullying in school- highlighted in the case study makes the reader formulate several considerations. The primary consideration entails teaching or addressing the issues of family diversification. If it cannot be tackled at school, at least parents should address it at home. It is essential as students will comprehend the significance of discriminating against others due to their sexual orientation. In turn, reducing the disruption in classrooms.

Part IV

The case reveals the four stakeholders involved due to the issue. They are the teachers, students, principals (or school heads), and parents. Nonetheless, they are other concerned parties that are not mentioned. Parties like the school board, district administrators and community members. The family diversity issue poses lots of outcomes- one being the integration of the diversity issue into the classroom lessons. In doing this, the additional three stakeholders will be consulted.

Part V

In the work of Wilmot, he demonstrates that conflicts can take on destructive paths, and under these conflicts, he coined the escalatory and avoidance spiral. The former, the parties involved in the conflict, try to get even. While the latter individuals avoid each other. In both cases, the conflict is accelerated, thus destructive. Escalatory spiral can occur when the parents and teachers start blaming each other during the meeting, whereas the other can happen when the parents or the teacher fail to show up in the meeting, or removing of the children from Ms. Ribiero class. Wilmot goes further in offering strategies that can eliminate the conflicts. Concerning the case, the best strategy will be for the teacher to take responsibility and seeking help from a third party – the principal. The third-party, according to Wilmot, reverse the conflict spiral by supporting the decisions of the participants and enacting approaches (Acheson, 2019).

Part VI

Other approaches that Ms. Ribiero could have taken include instantaneously talking to the students about making fun of others and emphasize on acceptance and loving of everyone. She could also have elaborated that families are different by touching on non-controversial structures like single parents and distant families. On the other hand, if, according to her teaching of same-sex parents was the only option, she could have taken several measures before teaching it in class. She ought to have sent letters to the students’ parents complemented by the book she read. It would have made the parents feel included and brought forward suggestions.

Part VII

In addressing the issue, Ms. Ribiero straightforwardly talks about same-sex parent phenomena in the class conversation. It was better to approach the issue indirectly- avoid being straightforward. She could have done this by letting the students define a family and give examples of the differences that are present and concluding the issue by stating that all the families need to be respected.
