My adulthood
My adulthood has been shaped by various occurrences, which had both a positive and negative impact on my life. In my college-age, I involved myself in activities that were productive such as helping my dad in his carpeting shop. These taught me the virtue of hard work and the pain of earning from your sweat. I have kept this principle to date, as I always ensure that I undertake all my duties with determination and hard work. Also, the importance of honesty in life was taught upon me by my father. Working as a plumber or a carpenter requires an individual to be honest with their clients. This type of work often requires individuals trusting you to make their things, and usually at times to purchase equipment on their behalf. Back at school, I developed another important ethical principle, which is the Golden rule. That does unto others what you expect them to do to you. As a football player, I would occasionally find myself in a position that would expose me to bullying other students as a result of the friends I had. Such behavior is harmful and affects the person being bullied in both the short term and long term. I once was bullied in my high school years, and I understand how such behavior can be harmful to the victim.
It’s critical to understand the golden rule as it enables living in harmony. In my final year of college, I used to volunteer to work in our community church. Although no payment was received, it was fulfilling’s as it gave me the feeling that apart from going to school am contributing something to society no matter how small. “Do good” principle, which is also reinforced by the bible, helped me realize that we are one human family who is interconnected by various factors. In my high school years, my brother was involved in a severe car accident, which left him with eleven broken ribs and in need of blood. Our neighbor volunteered to donate her blood to save our brother’s life since she had the rare O negative blood type. Last summer, when we had several cases of burglary in our neighborhood, our neighbor, who had helped my brother, was one of the victims. My brother initiated a fund me campaign to help her since she had lost a substantial amount of property. This situation shows how simple do good acts can be helpful.
Growth is a step by step process, and I have witnessed this process from my father, who started his carpentry shop with a small room. Over the years, his shop grew to a level of employing seven full-time employees. The patient in my life has been enforced by the environment in which I grew up. My father who is still my role model illustrated to me that nothing substantial happens over a short period. It takes patience, hard work, and persistence to break through and achieve our goals. I applied this lesson to my college-age by avoiding short cut methods of earning money. My colleagues would skip classes to attend to leisure matters, which consumed much of their valuable time and added nothing useful to them. Their arguments are that class is annoying, but since I learned that nothing is given on a silver platter, I attend classes without failure and still create time to carry out the leisure activities.
The challenges faced in the various phases in my life have curved me into the individual I am today. My father, relentless reminder of hard work, pays and my mother advice on the various approach to issues has helped me to face life the way it is and live each day as if it was my last. This has enabled me to give out my best in every activity I take part in. Besides, my religious background has outlined the fundamentals of life and the recognition ability of what is right or wrong and also the application of those principles which guide me every day.
