The 2001 decision by the Department of Health to launch the Expert Patients Program aimed at improving the involvement of patients in their treatment process, and to enhance their quality of life when living with Long term illnesses. The program was founded on the argument that patients who had suffered long term illnesses were in the best positions to know what they want in managing their conditions. Additionally, the formation of the program also acknowledged the fact that patients were shifting from being just recipients of medical care, but also wanting involvement in decisions on their care and treatment (NICE & Prescribing, 2015). The patient medication self-management was one of the most impactful prepositions of the program, which aimed at mitigating the severity of symptoms and improving the confidence of the patient in the treatment and health conditions management process. However, the most significant challenge of the patient medication self-management proposal was the patient’s desire to be involved and engaged in their own treatment process. A good example is Mr. Hadden, the patient in the case study with a Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Despite the severity of his condition, Mr. Hadden’s stubbornness in keeping up with the medication and continuing to smoke are examples of the challenge of patient medication self-management. Therefore, the concept of priorities for patient medication self-management helps in dealing with issues like the case of Hadden. Thus, this article identifies and discusses some of the preferences in Hadden’s medication self-management as a patient with COPD.

One of the essential priorities in Hadden’s medication self-management support from the medical staff and caregivers. One of how caregivers can ensure the priority of support for the patients is through the supported self-management program. The supported medication self-management approach is an effective method of dealing with patients with COPD like Hadden because evidence-based results show that it is effective for respiratory conditions like COPD and improve the quality of life (Pinnock, Steed & Jordan, 2016). Additionally, the priority of supported medication self-management is also effective for patients like Hadden, who have problems with following the standard guidelines for patient medication self-management. Another significant priority of medication self-management for COPD patients like Hadden is the exacerbation and enhanced communication between the patient and the nurses involved in health care provision. Exacerbation and communication between the patient and the caregiver, especially in the case of Hadden, makes clinical sense because it helps deal with the challenge of appropriate medication self-management (Nici et al., 2014). Hadden is COPD patients with difficulties in appropriately self-managing their medication hence the significance of the communication and exacerbation priority.

Nursing interventions to support Hadden in his medication self-management

Nursing interventions that support COPD patients during their medication self-management period are very crucial because they impact the clinical outcomes of the entire treatment process. Some of the responses that can apply in the case of Hadden include mental health-related interventions and interventions targeting symptoms management alone. Psychological health-related interventions can support Hadden in his medication self-management process because of his currently growing anxiety regarding the increasing severity of the illness. On the other hand, interventions targeting symptoms management alone are the nursing interventions that aim to ensure that the patients follow the guidelines that are provided on medication and monitor the continuous reaction of the patient towards the medication (Newham et al. 2017). Interventions targeting symptom management will also help both the patient and the nurse determine the impact of medication self-management on the average health-related quality of life (HRQOL). A proper analysis of Hadden’s COPD medication self-management found that the nurse-led intervention approach is also very crucial towards supporting his recovery process (Padilha, 2018). The nurse-led interventions will be useful because they will help the patient deal with the new viral infection that was diagnosed four days ago. The viral infection caused an acute exacerbation of Hadden’s COPD.

Evaluating effectiveness

However, the success of the nursing interventions used in supporting Hadden’s medication self-management depends on the results of the analysis. According to the results of the effectiveness evaluation. There are different approaches used to evaluate the success of the nursing interventions that this article has discussed above. One effective way of assessing the effectiveness of the nursing intervention approaches is through patient education. The Nursing interventions that this article has mentioned above are sophisticated intervention strategies that also require complex evaluation approaches. One of the most effective complex evaluation approaches is the randomized evaluation approach. The randomized evaluation approach is the most robust method that prevents selection bias during the evaluation process and ensures evaluation results interpret the true effectiveness or failure of any form of nursing intervention. The most significant aspect of the randomized evaluation approach is that it prevents the likeliness of bias in the evaluation. However, the randomized approach can also be ineffective and unnecessary, especially in situations where the impact of the interventions on enhancing the patient’s management of self-medication is too large or immediate to evaluate in a randomized approach (Craig et al. 2008). Additionally, the randomized approach can also be very ineffective when the changes are too small to record or may take a very long time to appear.
