Government legal obligations about Coronavirus outbreak

At the beginning of the year 2020, the world health organization declared the Covid-19 disease outbreak in Hubei province from China. By 20th march 2020, there were over 300, 000 cases worldwide, with the most cases in Italy and China. There over 80,000 Covid 19 cases in China, but the statistics keep changing as more cases are identified each day. On the other hand, the death rate in Italy has overtaken death rates in China. As over 4000 people have already lost their lives due to Covid-19 in Italy while in China they are slightly above 3000. The statistics keep changing as the disease is easily spread.  As we all know, humans connect and interact as they go about their prevalent activities. WHO and governments are sensitizing people to socially distance to avoid further spread of the Covid-19 since its cure has not been found yet.

During this critical period, each country’s government needs to be up to the task to ensure the safety of its citizens. Without adequate protective policies in the government response, plans may lead to legal-related alarms. In this article, I will discuss the legal obligations of the governments on the life-threatening pandemics like the current Covid-19 virus.

Offer accurate information on the virus

Offering correct details on the Covid-19 disease is crucial in enhancing protection. It is the legal obligation of the government to ensure people get accurate information on the coronavirus epidemic. Update citizens on the official recommended and mandated actions applicable within the laws.

Impose restrictions to avoid Covid-19 spread

The United Nations charter on human rights and many constitutions all over the world protect human rights. Therefore every jurisdiction of every government should impose restrictions to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Although it is the legal right for every citizen to move one point to next or country to next, it should be prohibited following the Covid-19 virus until a solution is found. It is within the jurisdiction of any government to impose restrictions upon direct threats to the safety and health of its citizens. Due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, many states have imposed lockdowns within their countries to avoid further spread.

Privacy protection of Covid-19 virus-infected citizens

The protection of a person’s privacy is highly regarded in many countries. However, the governments have a legal obligation to understand the personal health data but not mandated to disclose. Disclosing information about the Covid-19 virus identity disclosure of the infected persons may expose them to stigma. It is their right to take any legal action as they are of failure to protect their privacy. Therefore the government should ensure that the persons protected health information is safe.

Conclusion

All the countries around the world should work towards the protection of their citizens against the Covid-19 virus. It is with their mandates. However, while working to protect their citizens, they should adhere to the above legal obligations. Failure to comply may lead to legal suits and penalties to those who fail to abide by the set rules.
