The Freedom of Expression and its Impact on Media in the US

It is worth noting that freedom of expression gives exclusive rights as well as duties to the media. In the United States, the media plays a tremendous role in informing society, especially on matters of public interest and also generates a significant platform for public debate, scrutiny as well as reflection (Gwinn Wilkins, 2000). As such, independent media and what is described as quality journalism are seen as the ‘watchdog’ of a democratic society in America.

The freedom of expression in the country has been identified as a foundation for plurality in information. It is proper to note that for a couple of years, it has been said that the concentration of media ownership happens to be one of the biggest threats when it comes to pluralism, including the diversity of information. In this case, it becomes significant to realize that the freedom of expression in the United States is closely related to what can best be identified as the problem of concentration of ownership.

As far as the United States is concerned, it is important to remember that a society that is not well-informed cannot be viewed as a truly free society. This is primarily because freedom of expression happens to be a keystone upon which the very existence of a democratic community rests (Carter, 1988). Additionally, freedom of expression on media is the only sure way through which members of society can be sufficiently informed. It is also essential when it comes to the formation of public opinion.

In the United States, freedom of expression makes it possible for the media to enable people to be in a position to develop their own political opinion hence comparing it with the opinions of others. As far as this is concerned, it becomes essential to discover that only an informed person can make an assessment as well as freely embrace one or another position when it comes to the political spectrum. The country understands that it is through freedom of expression that it becomes possible for media to inform citizens about public affairs, including monitoring the activities of government at various levels.

The First Amendment takes care of the media in the United States. According to the United States Constitution, no member of the press should be punished for their views, thoughts or even words as long as this is done to enlighten the public (Allen, & Jensen, 1995). By respecting freedom of expression, the media in the nation stands in a better position to enjoy democracy. As it is always said, the liberty of the people, to a great extent, depends on the freedom of expression.
