Economics In Pop Culture

  • Why did you choose this particular example of economics in pop culture? Why did it resonate with you?

I chose Vinnie Paz’s Writing on Disobedience and Democracy as he chronologically gives details to several economic situations that took place in American history and the politics behind them. Economic inequality, especially among people of color, is emphasized in the song. Paz explains how President Reagan got rid of benefits for the poor, which mainly consisted of people of color, to fund the war. The effect trickled down to unemployment, where about thirty million people were unemployed.

  • What do you think the creator was trying to express, and how did s/he accomplish that?

Paz was trying to educate people on what really took place historically, the things not accurately taught in classes. He wanted to show that the economic inequality that is taking place in the current world against people of color has a historical aspect. He accomplished this by narrating the events chronologically, giving the problem and the cause.

  • What are some of the benefits of using this method of political/economic speech? Some of the pitfalls?

Music is a significant part of popular culture, and apart from being a source of entertainment, it can be used as a platform for discussing economic, social, and political issues. The rhythm, instruments, and lyrics of hip-hop usually create a group identity as it stirs strong sentiments, engaging the audience and amassing them to take charge. People listen to music everywhere they go. Thus, when an artist communicates a message through music, they can reach a wider audience, especially people not interested in the details of economics or politics.

The aim of passing on a message through music is that people may genuinely listen and thus join each other in making economic, political, or social changes. However, most people focus on the instruments and rhythms in songs, treating it as just a form of entertainment, and never really focusing on the lyrics.

  • Do you think this is an effective way for this artist to send his/her message? Why or why not?

I think this is an effective way for the artist to communicate his message as songs are often repeated on media platforms. This will get his followers to repeat the song and them using it as a starting point for discussing the issues with other people. The message will also reach many people across different areas.
