Arm Reduction

The two political cartoons below take distinctly different views of détente. Do they both make valid points? Was it a good idea for the US to negotiate arms reductions treaties with the Soviets? Was it a good idea for the Soviets? Do these issues affect Russian relationships with other countries today? (Do not focus on the last question only; provide and discuss the historical basis.)

While the intention behind the arms reduction treaties was good for the US, it proved to be excessively complicated, expensive, and cumbersome. Since soviet had hundreds of missiles against the US, the talk released some tension for a short while. Some of the benefits of treatment are that were achieved included the exchange of data regarding the strategic weapons as well as associated facilities (Leonard, Udoudom, & Bassey, 2019). The inspection was conducted to verify data on the technical features or characters of strategic missile s well as the implementation of the provision on test launches and telemetry exchanges. However, the US did not benefit from this effort because the military weapons had not reduced based on the treaties that were in place. Additionally, the treaties banned the testing of the missile with an increased number of warheads, and the ban put on the new ballistic missiles with the number exceeding 20 warheads.

In my option, the treaty was good for Russia, and they could have followed it to the ladder. The Soviets failed to comply with the treaty as they thought it was not good for them (Leonard, Udoudom, & Bassey, 2019). Russia could produce the false number of warheads as contrarily to what was quoted in the contract and covertly produced the missiles. Russia could also perform espionage during the US investigation of military facilities.

The issue still affects the relationship between Russia and other countries. Most countries do not like conducting business with Russia because they are threatened by the country’s military weaponry secrecy and ambitions (Shahzad, 2018). Therefore, they fear to fall into war if a disagreement arises. The country did not comply with the SALT treaty, and at some point, there was a manufacture of military weapons that were not allowed. Dangerous weapons can be a threat to the neighboring countries; as a result, the interaction is limited. However, with the economic cooperation practiced all over the world, the new friendship between the countries has started developing.
