parenting style and their effect on children at a young age and in the future

Most researchers argue there is no one way proved to be right to bring up a child as a parent. However, a child’s behavior is usually characterized by how his parent has raised him. One’s parenting style has so much to do with how his or her child sees things and how he feels about himself.  Parents should ensure that their parenting style contributes to healthy growth and development since a parent’s interaction with her kids to the approach used to discipline them will influence their life throughout their stages of growth. Parenting style is, therefore, more of a psychological format that represents different strategies that parents use in raising their kids. The main parenting styles are; authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and uninvolved parenting. This paper explores the parenting style and their effect on children at a young age and in the future.

Authoritative parenting is seen in parents who set rules in that a child’s mischief is accompanied by a consequence. This parenting style is very demanding and is characterized by a lot of responsiveness as the parents respond to their child’s emotional needs. Authoritative parents set limits that are consistent and have boundaries since the parents spend a lot of time and energy to observe their child’s behavior and to ensure that they are checked at a young age. For instance, this style can be used on the nine and eleven kids that want to play PlayStation games all the time to prevent them from addiction as withdrawal from such games would affect them emotionally in the future if not controlled. It can also be applied to the third-grader who has removed beer cans from the refrigerator. The parent should set clear rules, boundaries, and consequences such as punishments, failure to which will result in alcoholism.

Moreover, the authoritative parenting style should also be used on the kids who are delighted in using swearwords. In this case, the parent must insist on knowing where the children are learning this from. The parent must also explain that swearwords are wrong, and it is inappropriate for them to use them at their age. It is could also apply to a case where a ten-year-old daughter wants to start putting on make-up and fancy clothes like her peers. The parent must make her learn to principled in that she must not do what her peers are doing in the name of fashion. This will help her make viable decisions in the future in that she will not be carried away by peer pressure.  Lastly, this parenting style can be used to the second-grader, insisting that he does not need a baby sitter. The parent should explain to him that the baby sitter will protect him from risky situations.

Authoritarian parenting, on the other hand, is a parenting style where the parent wants to control the child fully without giving reasons behind their rules. These parents believe that a child has no say, thus does not involve when solving a problem, and their word is always final. Children raised by authoritarian parents suffer low esteem because they believe that their opinions and ideas are irrelevant as they are not valued. However, this parenting style could be used in cases that a child’s choice is wrong and cannot be debated on. For example, in situations where the teacher complains that your child does not complete his homework, neither does he concentrate in class. The parent must insist that education is essential and must be taken seriously. Another case that authoritarian parenting can be applied is when a fourth-grade girl insists on wearing expensive clothes and shoes that the parent cannot afford. The parent must be very strict on this and explain to her that she has to wait until she is grown enough to earn her own money to buy what she wants.

How a parent raises her child will determine how responsible he will be in the future as well as the level of his self-esteem. A parent must, therefore, be extra careful about what behavior to entertain, which to control and which to stop. They must also understand that maintaining a positive relationship with their children is essential as it makes them responsible in the future.
