Mobile Phone Trend Commentary

Mobile phones are referred to as a form of wireless communication devices with high frequencies that enable consumers to send and receive data or information at the same time. The History of mobile telephones dates back in the year 1940s. First phones invented were barely portable as compared with the recent devices that are easily portable. Phones were also cumbersome, expensive and bulky. In the process of creating a more portable technology, several or drastic reforms has been evident in both wireless communication of networking and use prevalence across the world. Internet access has increased, thus making smartphones common in the whole world.  In this paper, History, the importance, trend, and the future of cell phones will be examined.

The first mobile phone, known as Motorola DynaTac, was created in 1983. It was large but still considered as the most portable device that was ever invented during that time. During this time, human beings were able to make calls using the wireless system. Before the development of Motorola, several inventions were done aiming to come up with the wireless telephone. For instance, during World War one, radiotelephony links were used by the militaries. The testing of wireless phones was done in 1924 on first-class passengers on trains between the two cities running from Berlin to Hamburg. All the new technologies that were invented since the 1940s inspired some researchers from Bell Labs to develop a car phone system. The phone system for vehicles was to help consumers receive calls while in their cars.

Bell Labs later started to offer mobile phone services on most of the vehicles. Between the years 1957 and 1961, the first mobile phone that could fit in one palm was launched by Leonid Kupriyanovich. The inventions continued in several years as different people to come up with new devices until when the first phone call was made in the year 1973. Executive Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher, was the first to place a call. The phone was 23cm long and weighed 1.1 Kilograms. However, the researchers realized that if they could come up with wireless technology, they will be able to create a market for the phones. The first IG network was created and deployed in Tokyo, which then came to spread to Japan, and other countries such as Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Finland were able to use the same network. Users did not consider security since they were only happy as they were able to communicate with others across the nation.

Despite Motorola’s weight, high cost of purchase, and poor battery life, it was accepted in the market and became widely successful as thousands of people demanded it. In the 1990s, 2G cellular networks emerged, which allowed the use of SMS, where the first text was sent in Finland. This followed by the release of the world’s first smartphone compared to today’s standards in 1993. Later 3G network was introduced as users wanted to do more than just making a call that included internet browsing. 3G network was improved to 4G technology in 2007, which increased the browsing speed by ten times that of a 3G network.

The use of mobile phones has benefited more people in several ways. Currently, most people feel like they cannot stay without owning phones, and they have only been in existence for the last twenty years. Mobile phones were invented for a variety of purposes, particularly the current smartphone. The users have become diverse and inseparable from the phones. It has become something of great value, hence transforming into what is termed as user comfort technology. Its trend is a result of making business life much easier due to its diverse functionality. Some of the business companies can sell their products via online platforms, thus reducing congestions of queuing when purchasing. Consumers can make orders online and even wait for delivery at the doorstep. Therefore, mobile payment of certain products and services has increased mobile trend because of the following reasons;

  • Payments made via mobile are not restricted to certain brands. These payments include; buying of tickets, online shopping both national and internationally, and paying bills for oneself and others. Payments are made possible with the help of Google’s Android Pay. Store gifts and Credit cards allow consumers to make payments for purchased goods via the app.
  • The use of apps such as Apple or Android Pay helps consumers not to retype card information hence prevents them from mistakenly purchasing via the app.
  • Payment information is encrypted by Apple pay, and therefore, users don’t have to worry about hacking from external sites. This is made possible as users are given the opportunity of generating a unique token for every transaction made.
  • Contactless transactions can be initiated by the use of mobiles hence reducing the chances of credit cards being stolen.

Smartphone has proven to be the mobile wallets into today’s businesses as they are first, safe and quick. Finances and stocks can be easily managed using mobile technology as it is equipped with internet connectivity, making it easy to gain access to required information. Business meetings for clients can be made possible through video conferencing without meeting up physically. Apart from its benefits in the business world, users can entertain themselves through watching videos from YouTube, downloading of files, and games when they are free. It also increases the rate of interactions via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

The future of Mobile Phones

For the past ten years, smartphones have developed and changed rapidly in terms of its use and continued creation of different features. Throughout its use, it has proven that anything that one may think of doing or invent with the help of technology is possible. Technology will always continue to advance with new technological gadgets being introduced with time. Most of the software can be improved to ‘the cloud’ and whatever that will be entailed within the product. I believe that in the future, smartphones will completely take over the market. Phones have proven to have a shifting purpose since its invention, changing shape with time, and therefore we may not be able to tell how these smartphones change the consumers.

Conclusion

Since the start of the development of mobile technology, phones have assisted human beings in a variety of ways. Phones are vital in many ways, more especially in case there is an emergency, whether sickness or accidents for both in rural and urban regions. They provide secure communication from those living far away from each other. Therefore, mobile technology is here to stay and continue advancing in several ways in the future since it has made life more comfortable as it meets the basic needs of individuals.
