Technology and human communication
I tend to think of technology as any invention that makes life easier for us humans. I, therefore, have never limited my view of it to modern-day gadgets like phones as many others tend to believe. Simple inventions such as recyclable shopping bags are also considered technology for the huge part they play in conserving the environment, making it cleaner for human living. In prehistoric times, one of the most important inventions for humans was fire. Fire was significant not only in serving its primary purpose of providing heat for the humans at night but also helped in the cooking of foods, making them easier to digest and to eat (Singh, 2017). The convenience fire and other hunting methods invented such as the use of hooks offered, and the improvements in health it promised led to significant mental and physical development for humans (Singh, 2017). Language was also a remarkable invention, such as the hieroglyphics, despite their simplicity at the time. They made human communication easier and, consequently, other essential activities such as hunting.

Indeed, language is very much an important invention for us human beings. It would be hard imagining the current world with humans lacking the ability to communicate with each other, as we are an interactive species. The advent of most languages we speak is thought to have been in the prehistoric periods, with other much simpler languages, which then evolved and broke off to the different languages present today.

No, technology is not necessarily limited to the modern-day gadgets, though that is a view most people tend to opt for. Even the simplest inventions such as fish hooks, as you mentioned, set a foundation for the developments we have today. For instance, the fish hooks made hunting for fish easier, and the protein thus consumed contributed to the mental development of our species, eventually leading to the complex inventions we see today.
