The Liberal Arts Education
In general, liberal arts education is a study of “arts and sciences.” Liberal arts education imparts general knowledge and improves the learners’ intellectual abilities hence facilitating innovativeness and creativity. In my discussion, I shall seek to examine the significance of liberal arts education and its contribution to my career and other life endeavors. I shall also discuss the relevance of liberal arts education in the current century.
Liberal arts education is important in the modern day world because other than helping one to secure an employment opportunity and earn a considerably higher salary in comparison to high school leavers. Also, upon a further education, a salary equal to those graduated with a qualification in one of the STEM, it also develops a good sense of critical thinking, problem solving skills, and good communication skills (Ungar, 2010).
The liberal arts education is relevant to my career. The healthcare field, especially my area of specialization as a nursing practitioner, is dependent on evidence based practices. Liberal arts education stretches our critical thinking and problem solving skills in a manner as to administer the best evidence based patient care. In my 12 years of experience as a nursing practitioner, I have witnessed immense changes in the nursing practice. Today, nurses are required to analyze research data, lead hospital units, departments, and groups, and even work as a team. All these initiatives require appropriate problem solving, communication, and critical thinking skills. Hence the relevance of liberal arts education to my career and, ultimately, its relationship to me.
Lastly, liberal arts education is relevant in this; 21st century. This is because liberal arts education enhance our understanding of history, certain epitomes, aspirations, and matters of social concerns. Liberal arts supply the necessary intellectual basis for success in the 21st century dynamic world (Debra 2014). According to Ferch (2017), in this century, most employers are likely to hire individuals with a liberal art education background. Findings in support indicate that four out of five employers share an opinion that potential employs should possess a wide knowledge of sciences and arts.
In conclusion, Dix (2016) argues in a Forbes circular, that agreeing to disagree on a certain subject matter, is the works of liberal arts education. Liberal arts offers a wide perspective of things in a world where anything is possible. Therefore, we are made to believe in a certain perspective based on reason and not merely an inherited opinion.
