Impact of Online Shopping in Major cities
Online shopping is a booming industry, and the public loves it. The convenience of online shopping takes away, battling traffic congestion and air pollution. It has also made it very possible for the disabled and older people to make purchases they are otherwise unable to make on physical stores. Like with any other growth, the internet economy has both a positive and negative effect. Thousands of jobs have been created for delivery people and truck drivers. Real estate companies are making a kill with the leasing of warehouses to shopping companies. Truck traffic congestion and roadway safety are some of the significant downsides, with cities like New York handling more than 1.5 million package deliveries. Ms. Kaufman of New York University observes that “we’ve entered an entirely new way of buying goods and services, but our infrastructure is only adapting incrementally.” The traffic strain is not one that will go away soon, and a lot is required to be done to keep pace with the ever-growing online economy.
