It defines a tale where two boys are growing up in a pathetic state along the infamous west side of henry Horner Homes which is a public housing project. Although the housing project, together with others, has faced demolition all around Chicago, the author’s accounting to the operations and living standards that were experienced in the suburbs enables the readers to drive an image of what the residents were passing through; poverty, race discrimination, neglection of the poor. The main objective of the writing was driving and capturing the innocence of the adolescence with the hard times and impossible survival environment that lay before the children who tried in surviving in Chicago’s streets that were full of violence leave alone growing in the streets (Kotlowitz, 1992).

In the book, the depiction of poverty is not as quickly forgotten as one could assume. “There is one plot point in specific that I cannot shake” aid in the explanation of the way the significant forces agree and manage a narrative when it comes with dealing with the police misconduct, or in our case the absence of a value for the life of human in the poor society.

With a lot of certainties, there is no one has been charged or questioned on what befell Craig Davis, who is a boy killed as he tried to avoid the police since he had intended to collect a few music records at a friend’s place. The preface of the shooting was significant in the creation of a sense of how Craig would be named as a gangster in the reports given by authorities after the shooting occurred, and how the news was understood by the society where Craig grew (Kotlowitz, 1992). The community was delighted by the Performance of Craig in the music industry where he performed as a Dj. The main reason that Craig was afraid of the police was caused by previous incidents where the police suspected that Davis and his allies were culprits of cookies from a delivery truck, where the cops tracked the group and haunted them down in a friend’s apartment and put them under arrest. The poor backgrounds and less value of human life for the people living in the suburbs was the main reason for the arrest where Davis made an explanation to a family member that they had nothing to do with cookie heist (Kotlowitz, 1992). Following the night spent in the police cells for a crime not committed developed fears to the boys towards the police and broke their interaction, thus discouraging out brotherhood unison.

From the report that was drawn by parties involved in the CPD, the ATF –federal Alcohol, Tobacco and firearms or even the family gave no apologies or any full address of the occurrence. There are genuine, meaningful conversations describing the usage of force and departmental policy (Kotlowitz, 1992). The authors derive the expected scandals in case such incidences occur, for instance, the newspaper reporting shows the most of people are missing the expected representation when addressing the real situations that befall them during their daily routine within the crime-infested neighborhoods.

The government and other relevant authorities are challenged to put more effort into guarding and instilling hopes to the marginalized and poverty-stricken citizens. Ensuring that they regain a healthy living standard and a life that will shade away crime development and practices in the society which the authorities do prevention and investigations are devaluing and affecting the innocent families in the community.
