Howard was born in 1953 in New York. He was the son of an ex-soldier of the United States Army and who is currently a truck driver Fred Schultz. He was brought up in a Jewish family that adhered to the Jewish culture. Howard grew with his young sister and brother Ronnie and Michael in New York housing Authority, a house in Canarsie Bayview. He was able to attend Canarsie High school and later graduated from the same school in 1971. Schultz was involved in various school activities, including playing high school football. He participated in multiple championships aiming to win a football scholarship at Northern Michigan University, but he was not able to play a good quarterback. Howard was forced to finance his college education with government loans and money gained from part-time jobs. Despite all these challenges, he was able to receive his bachelor’s degree in 1975 in speech communication.

Upon graduation from college, Schultz managed to secure a job as a salesperson for Xerox Corporation, where he was quickly promoted to a full salesman. Later in 1979, he was made the general manager of the Mammaplasty, which was a Swedish drip coffee manufacturer. He was able to manage the operations of the company with just a team of twenty employees. Howard was a man of great curiosity where, at a point, he happened to visits a client of Mammaplasty and investigated why the client was ordering so many plastic cones filters.

He would show a lot of interest in the company’s activities and knowledge of coffee, which made him keep in contact with them in the next year. After a year, he was able to join the Starbucks company as a marketing director. He maneuvered for a trip to Italy, where he learned that coffee bars were in almost all the streets, and nearly 200,000 cafes in the country served as a vital element of culture and societal wellbeing in Italy.

The experience in Italy made him collaborate with the cofounder Jerry Baldwin to help him mobilize the owners to offer espresso beverages, which were traditional as an addition to the leaf tea, bean coffee, and spices which they had earlier on providing to their customers. After numerous attempts to convince the owners to buy the idea of the café concept, they turned them down after the successful piloting of the concept. The argument beyond the turn down was that; they did not want to engage in the restaurant business. As a business person, he got much frustrated and decided to quit Starbuck in 1985.

He was a very aggressive entrepreneur and needed about $400,000 to establish a store and begin a business. He was not in a position to raise the amount, but his friends Gordon Bowker a Starbucks cofounder and Jerry Baldwin, a friend, came to his rescue and gave him financial support. As a gambler in business, he inspired a doctor who offered to support him with $100,000 to start his business. In 1986, he had adequate resources to establish the company and offered an ice cream in addition to coffee in his store. The store had little seating, and despite this, he could play some music known as opera in the background, which was made to bring about Italian experience.

In two years, the original Starbuck was sold to him by the management as they decided to focus on Tea and Peet’s coffee. Schultz immediately renamed II Gornall to Starbuck and expanded its operations in almost all parts of the United States. His company was made to grow faster because of his hardline focus and insight in real estate. Howard focused on ownership of all the domestic outlets of the business since he did not believe in franchising. For several years the company was able to trade its common stocks internationally, making it grow in significant dimensions.

In 2000, he was able to step down as the CEO of the company and ascended to being the chief global strategist that made him grow and expand the company internationally. He later on returned as the CEO of the company after eight years, whereby Starbucks had grown exponentially following the opening of new stores. On the same note, some store sales were declining where he was falsely to fire a number of its executives.

Howard has several personality traits, which made him a success in his business. He was gifted in various areas, for example, in natural leadership, which acquaints him with the capacity to gather wealth quickly. Schultz had excellent managerial skills where he was able to organize people, develop a vision, long-range goals, and also purpose for business success. He can understand the material world and how businesses operate in various fields, including law, science and industry, real estate, and also financial. These business traits which suit him best significantly contributed to his success in business. His abilities can also be witnessed in other areas like politics, teaching, social work, and in areas of influence and leadership.

He was able to inspire people to join him in promoting the growth of a business, even if they do not see his ultimate goal. Schultz has an entrepreneurial and progressive personality. In this trait, he can be seen as an ever-striving and always heading to the top positions. He is still determined to do things well geared by the unyielding dedication to ensure his plans and goals are realized.

Despite the above positive personalities towards business, Howard is also challenged in various aspects of life. To begin with, he is not able to comprehend that influence and power should be used for the gains of humankind. In his experiences, Howard was able to be ruled by greed and face the risk of losing everything. He is also reckless and lacks attention in length. This personality might not avoid him landing into financial losses and bankruptcies.

Howard Schertz used some leadership skills to better his performance in business. He was able to come up with different leadership approaches in the United States, which made him beat the other competitors in the market with a considerable margin. Among the criteria was the use of intellectual stimulation. Transformational leaders should not be afraid of the use of this method in business operations. In this kind of phenomenon, he preferred new ideas and managed to challenge the status quo and was able to create and develop a plan for the Americans where he came up with the most visited site, particularly after work and home. It is because of this approach that he was branded the king in coffee chains in the business world.

A clear vision approach was another leadership style that made him maneuver in his coffee business. He could be able to develop a clear vision which was more understandable among his team as a transformational leader. He knew that for the growth of his business to a massive company, he had to support his employees. In support of his employees, he had to extend new programs for the health benefits of part-time workers.

He would also aid workers in their tuition. He borrowed this idea from his father, who was a truck driver. His father, during his work, broke his leg and finally lost his job. It made him more personate of developing employee’s relations while building his brand as a top priority. The focus of profits and people was not common among other companies and made him an icon in the business world. In this approach, it is learned that companies or corporations should not concentrate on profits alone, but the welfare of the employees matters a lot.
