Oak Ridge National Library Survey
Introduction
This article is a summary of the following specific areas of ORNL, where the facility is involved in solving several major human problems:
Advanced Materials
ORNL is a national leader in the development of some of the most advanced materials in energy generation, storage and use. ORNL engages in some of America’s most comprehensive material research programs. Advanced materials research and development at ORNL rely on three main areas, namely; material synthesis, characterization and synthesis.
National Security
ORNL engages in the processes and practice of National Security by providing science-based solutions that help’s the government address complex national security issues. The organizations focus in areas such as public health, national defence, energy infrastructure and the economy. The organizations apply complex research-based solutions to critical areas of national security such as uranium and nuclear science, cyber-crime and data science, and advanced manufacturing that counters enduring and emerging threats to national security. Nuclear science
Despite being a sub-branch of research that ORNL conducts on National Security, Nuclear science is one of the library’s main focus because of the magnitude of its potential impact. ORNL’s Nuclear Science and Energy Directorate (NSED) department are engaged in addressing very many complex and compelling issues that help the government and defence in addressing national priorities.
Clean energy
As a science-based organization, ORNL is engaged in the production of clean energy to help in meeting goals of translating science into solutions towards creating a nexus of energy, environment and security. The organization, therefore, plays a critical role in America’s search for solutions towards a clean energy future. ORNL is delivering scientific solutions and technical breakthroughs that support the US Department of Energy’s mission of offering new sustainable energy solutions.
Neutron Science SNS and HFIR
The use of quantum materials in science has led to increased research on Neutron Science. A team of ORNL scientists work on the analysis of artificial neutron networks that analyze quantum data for material discoveries.
Supercomputing
The field of supercomputing is slowly gaining advances in the middle of the development of technology. ORNL is involved in supercomputing research through activities like the advancing high-performance computing for science discovery and continuation of US leadership in supercomputing technology. ORNL’s houses the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Faculty (OLCF), which Americas most powerful supercomputing forum.
ITER-Fusion energy
The department of fusion energy at ORNL combines the diverse staff of nuclear scientists with the organization’s ample facilities and advanced materials to research and develop attractive fusion energy sources. ORNL aims to aid the future development of fusion-based energy with remote solutions to prevent both accidental and environmental hazards.
Artificial Intelligence
ORNL aims to help in the acceleration of scientific discovery and boost national security with artificial intelligence. ORNL uses AI to aid the research processes and to tackle some of science’s most sophisticated research issues. The organization researches how AI can revolutionize computing capabilities positively by creating a unique opportunity for expedited understanding and a vastly improved world.
Nanophase Science
ORNL’s centre for Nanophase Materials Science focuses on providing national and international community access to a range of nanophase science research. The department engages in nanoscience research involving nanomaterials synthesis, imaging and characterization. Other areas include theory and simulation.
Industry Partnership
The organization engages in facilitating several industry partnership activities through its various departments, such as the Sustainable Transport Program. The program accelerates the processes of industry partnership by enabling the transfer of both resources and data.
Genetics problems
ORNL engages in finding solutions for genetic issues by engaging in federal genetical policy issues. The organization does not only advice the federal government on genetic policy issues and problems but also helps the government in finding research-based solutions towards these problems.
Salamander Activity
Researchers at ORNL believe that the salamanders have a new role in developing new sampling models. The organization is involved in the development of new species of the organism for scientific activities and research.
