Ethnographers spend much of their time writing what is known as vignettes, and it refers to short stories. Short stories are high, and they should be written, but using trivializing them should be stopped by utilizing problematic terms. Ethnographers always think of short descriptive literary sketch. Therefore, vignette can be considered as a marked text within a text that discreetly sets the ethnographic apart for analysis. The process provides opportunities to a writer to be vivid, writer, and storyteller but not merely an analyst. In this paper, I will select an ethnographic vignette and provide an in-depth reflection on how it has helped me understand education and learning differently.

In institutions of higher learning institutions, educational research plays an essential role in informing practice. Teachers are equipped with skills and knowledge during professional development that enables them to teaches their students better (Jeffries, & Maeder, 2005). Stories used in various forms have been established to be very powerful and successful strategies for teaching, modeling, and researching behavior (Bernhardt, 2018). Vignette is a type of story that is used in social science, and it is also applied in education health as modeling, research, and reflective tool. Vignette helps educators and researchers in several ways, and it has enhanced learning. For instance, the discussion has been significantly improved by vignette because they are easy and simple to construct.

Stories as a vignette helped me to understand education from a different perspective. These stories, when use in learning, they act as a stimulus to enhance learning. In school, there are sensitive topics that require an efficient approach to deliver them (Bernhardt, 2018). Therefore vignette can be applied by groups and individuals when exploring sensitive issues. Vignettes have been approved to be beneficial to the following areas of education modeling, reflection, discussion, and research. The approach can also be used to determine the qualification of a teacher (Jeffries, & Maeder, 2005). Vignettes are essential tools within education that have enhanced learning considerably. Additionally, they can be used alongside other tools to promote learning.

Vignettes are also applied in learning as an assessment tool that complements other traditional assessment tools. In education and research, vignettes have a wide range of usage, testing, definitions, and examples. Vignette influences teacher’s practice by stimulating value-laden constructs such as teacher understanding and beliefs. Similarly, in research, they have been used as central instruments for data collection (Bernhardt, 2018). When vignettes methods, research aims, and methodologies are aligned, methodological consistency is realised, and this promotes internal validity and supports the findings. In research, methodological consistency is achieved when the vignette framework is applied, and it involves three vital elements for vignette constructions such as design, conception, and administration.

Vignette helps in provoking diverse teacher’s practices and beliefs that are vital in enhancing student’s engagement in the classroom. Studies have proven that using vignettes in educational research is useful in gaining insights and concern of teachers about a given phenomenon; for example, student’s engagement in mathematics (Bernhardt, 2018). Teacher’s belief can be capture by using vignettes, and this helps in improving understanding of teachers (Bernhardt, 2018). Engagement and involvement within a classroom are essential for teachers. Therefore, when they use vignette, they get insights on how they can create a conducive environment for learners to engage effectively.

Beliefs are considered important indicators that can be used to examine and individuals’ decisions. Beliefs can shape a person’s values, perspectives, expectations, judgment, experiences, and direct their actions (Bernhardt, 2018). Educational practices, commitments, and decisions of teachers are influenced daily due to their beliefs (Jeffries, & Maeder, 2005). Teacher’s beliefs are of significance because everyone brings their personal cultural belief to the school. Hence, they employ this lens to assess students’ abilities to evaluate their potential and decide their future. Vignettes provide an informed understanding of teacher’s beliefs and improve classroom practices (Bernhardt, 2018). The attitudes and beliefs of teachers play an important role in making decision. For instance, educators with growth mindset are likely to convince their students to take challenging classes, though they might struggle.

In the field of education, vignettes have been used a models of effective teaching, to identify and stud beliefs and attitudes. Additionally, tool is essential in supporting teacher’s reflection, problem-solving abilities and development. Within the health field, vignettes are used to assess knowledge. Therefore, vignette has a wide application within the field of education (Jeffries, & Maeder, 2005). The tool promotes learning because it provides opportunity to learn, it promotes reflection, motivation, and collaboration.

Conclusion

Vignette has a positive effective in education/learning because it provides a useful attention and incentive for discussion. The constructions of vignette can be done through real life events and unrealistic events. In education, the tool is useful in exploring sensitive topic and generates large data from large participants group. Vignettes are also applied in learning as assessment tool that compliments other traditional assessment tool.
