How is television programming shaped by changes in the broader context of production practices (industry), regulation, and social and cultural conditions?
Assignment: How is television programming shaped by changes in the broader context of production practices (industry), regulation, and social and cultural conditions? For this essay you will analyze a single episode of a 70s or 80s crime drama: Charlie’s Angels. All episodes are posted on the course Moodle page. You will investigate the production practices, regulation, and social and cultural contexts that formed the backdrop of the time period of the episode in question in order to consider how a confluence of factors produce this show at this particular moment. Your paper should be organized around a central thesis statement that makes an argument about the ways that production practices, regulation, and social and cultural conditions shape the content of television.[unique_solution] You will use the material from the course, including the Hilmes textbook, any of the other course readings, and/or lecture. In addition, you will read ONE other provided reading specific to each series. For Charlie’s Angels you will read a book chapter by Elena Levine that specifically discusses the way television managed changing ideas about gender and sex in the 1970s. These extra assigned essays should be used to provide additional and concrete information about the specific context of the 1970s/1980s. In addition, you will provide specific examples from the show to help support/illustrate your thesis statement. Spend most of the space/time in your paper examining the specifics of your show and how it reflects key characteristics of its historical contexts. This means you will need to closely watch the selected episode that you are planning to discuss. All papers must include the following: • At least three specific and cited references Hilmes’ text. Direct quotes or paraphrasing is fine, but be sure you are accurately and fully utilizing the texts to support your argument. • At least three specific reference to the other reading specifically assigned for this paper. Direct quotes or paraphrasing is fine, but be sure you are accurately and fully utilizing the texts to support your argument. • At least five concrete examples from the episode under consideration. Such examples can include a summary of the plot of the episode, reference to a particular scene, character, event, etc. You might consider how the show is filmed, the way it handles (or ignores) social issues, etc. The following questions are meant to help guide you in contextualizing your selected episode. These are thinking questions to help you do that, and should not just be systematically answered in your paper. It is up to you to determine the best way to focus your argument: • What are some of the key television forms and aesthetics of the era in question (e.g. what did TV look like and why? What visual and narrative strategies helped produce shows in this genre?) • Who was the presumed audience for the program and how did that shape the content (e.g. consider general vs. narrowcasting audiences, influence of social context, etc.)? • How is the commercial imperative of television related to the content of the program? • What sort of regulatory policies influenced the changes from the classic network era show to the shows of the late 1970s or early 1980s show? How did TV content shift in order to address these new regulations? • Are there any limitations on how the program was produced or distributed that are important to its place in television? • How did social contexts around television (e.g. concern about content/public interest) help shape the program?
