Evidence Based Practice (PICOT)
Assignment Evidence base practice integrates best available evidence to guide nursing care, make decisions about care and improve patient outcomes It is a problem solving approach to clinical practice that integrates -systematic search for and critical examination of most relevant evidence to answer a clinical question -uses one’s own clinical expertise -includes patient preferences and values Starts with a PICO question P＝patient population of interest-can be age, gender, ethnicity, special disorder I＝Intervention/issue of interest-what you plan to do, or a variable of interest C＝comparison of interest-alternative considering O＝outcome of interest, what plan to accomplish; should be measurable T＝ Time- what is the time frame? For example- Does hand washing among healthcare workers reduce hospital acquired infections in 30 days? What is the effect of pre-op teaching on post-op compliance within one year? Assignment on Evidence Based Practice: -Formulate a PICO question related to your clinical practice area or area of interest (such as Maternity nursing or Pediatric nursing or Medications used to treat asthma) Conduct research related to the PICO question on nursing databases such as Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), UpToDate, EBSCO -Find one single research study related to your PICO topic. The article must come from a reputable, peer reviewed journal. It is preferable that it come from a nursing journal. -Prepare a one page summary of the research article and how it relates to your PICO question. (For example that talks about handwashing and hospital acquired infection, you need to obtain a research article on this topic) Your paper should be double spaced in 12pt font of Times New Roman).
