comparison between audiences

This memo is to provide you with an analysis of two different websites and their various audiences. These two websites are cancer nursing practice websites and the American cancer society. Mostly, you will find that there are differences in the styles of communication used since the audiences are different.

Significantly, both of these websites communicate information about cancer and the different needs of a patient, including the various stages of cancer. The data from both websites, therefore, addresses a similar subject. Additionally, both sites address audiences ranging between the ages of 20 to 50 years since their information is suitable for such an age. There is no specific cultural background for the audience since information is either professional or general.

However, there is a notable difference in their primary audience. For instance, in the American cancer society, the primary audience is the patients of cancer. In contrast, that of the cancer nursing website is a technical one, which is a group of nurses. Both sites require a good understanding of the English language, but the CNP requires that the level of education of the audience should allow them to understand nursing and medical terms.

As for the patient audience, the information provided proves that the primary audience does not have significant knowledge about cancer other than their diagnosis. On the other hand, the nursing audience has enough knowledge about the disease and has a professional understanding of the diagnosis, treatment, and crucial information such as drugs administered. The profession of this audience is nursing.

Significantly, this fact is evident through how much information the two websites are providing. For instance, the American Cancer Society offers a wide range of information, which includes the definitions of terms that are technical and information on various factors that can affect a cancer patient, such as their environment. There is attention to general information such as statistics showing the population of cancer survivors.

On the other hand, the cancer nursing practice website contains precise information on specific procedures and professional requirements, such as the standards of nursing when handling a cancer patient. Essentially, the approach taken in the delivery of the data is that of giving direction to a technical audience.

Essentially, there is also a contrast in the structure of sentences and paragraphs. In the ACS website, the sentences are long, with the longest having a maximum of 19 words. Additionally, the paragraphs in the ACS are made of a minimum of two long sentences. However, the CNP website has shorter sentences with the longest having 12 words while the paragraphs are in point form and are made of one sentence. There is clear evidence of precision in CNP, which shows that the audience is aware of most details, and hence there is no need for too much information. The length of paragraphs and the amount of information in the ACS site shows that the primary target audience does not have as much knowledge, and the information is probably new to them.

Significantly, despite the information in these two sites being addresses to specific primary audiences, there are secondary audiences that could use the information. For instance, the CNP site may be used by students of the nursing profession as well as caregivers. On the other hand, the secondary audience for the ACS site includes family members of patients and no patients.

The persuasive strategies used by the ACS site to deliver the information is the logos strategy and pathos. Mainly, this strategy involves the use of factual and correct information that is not misleading to the audience. There is also the use of credible supporting details, such as statistics. For example, the information seems to give attention to the number of patients who have either survived or who are suffering a specific type of cancer.

Additionally, there is a reference to historical analogies. There is the use of a lay person’s testimonies. Also, the site provides various claims, including hypotheses such as the effects of sleep on a cancer patient. There is an apparent effort to create a connection with the audience by use of these claims and simple language. Essentially, in a bid to connect with the audience, the style is informal.

On the other hand, CNP makes use of ethos through the provision of personal experience information by professionals. Also, there is the use of non-coercive details, such as treatment procedures. There is also prominent use of nursing and medical jargon, such as medical procedure names, words like ethics, and names of drugs. The style used in this site is formal as it addresses professionals.

Significantly, there is the use of images and illustrations on both sites. These images include pictures of patients, nurses at work, and machines. Both sites have not used tables in the delivery of information. However, the ACS site has gone ahead to include graphs and charts which give information like cancer prevalences.

In conclusion, the two sites provide useful information on cancer and different types of cancer. However, there is a notable difference in how the data is delivered with the CNP website indicating a more formal and technical approach.
