Lucy The Nurse

Jenny, Tommy, and Katie are best friends. The three of them are in grade five. Their families are neighbors. They go to school together, play together, and visit each other at their homes. One day, they were playing outside Jenny’s house. Tommy asked, “Jenny, where would you like to work when you grow up?” Jenny thought for a while, then said, “I would like to be a farmer.” Tommy looked at Katie and smiled. Katie rolled her eyes and sighed, “But why, Jenny? Won’t you get dirty as a farmer? Besides, no one in your family is a farmer.” Jenny thought for a while and said, “I love to be a farmer anyway. I will grow fruits on my farm and not buy them at the store. I will grow apples. I love apples.”

“I love bananas. Won’t you farm bananas, Jenny?” Katie said with a sad look on her face. Tommy laughed and looked at Jenny. “If you love bananas, Katie, I will grow bananas, sell them to you, and become rich!” Jenny said jokingly, and the three children laughed happily.  “Hey, what about you, Tommy? What would you like to do when you grow up?” Jenny asked. “I would like to be a teacher like Mrs. Johnson. She is kind, and she loves children.” “I would love to be a mechanic. I love how daddy opens the hood of his car.” Said Katie. “But won’t you get dirty as a mechanic?” Tommy asked Katie. They all laughed in a chorus.

It was 5.00 p.m., it was cold, and dusk was approaching. Tommy, Jenny, and Katie were tired from playing. Tommy and Katie bid Jenny good-bye and left for their homes. The following day at 9.00 a. m, Tommy and Jenny went to see Katie at her home. They found her in bed looking tired, pale, and sickly. She had a fever, and she was sweating profusely. “You children played quite late yesterday. We will have to take Katie to the hospital.” Said Katie’s mom. “I am sorry, Katie. You will feel better.” Tommy said apologetically. Tommy and Jenny stood by Katie’s bed, looking sad with their heads bent.

Tommy and Jenny accompanied Katie and her parents to the hospital. At the hospital, Lucy, a pediatric nurse, received Katie. Lucy was friendly, bubbly, and talked to Katie with kindness and genuine concern. “You are only suffering from mild pneumonia. You will get better, and you will join your friends again.” Lucy said, smiling at Katie and patting her on the shoulder. Katie returned a weak smile.  Lucy gave Katie an injection, prescribed her drugs, and discharged her.

From that experience, something stirred in Jenny’s heart. She did not want any of her friends to fall sick again. On Monday morning, they met at the school gate. Katie had almost recovered fully. Jenny looked thoughtful. “What is the matter, Jenny?” Tommy asked, concerned. “Guys, I changed my mind. When I grow up, I want to be a nurse, as kind and caring as nurse Lucy. Next time you fall sick, Katie, I will be the one to treat you.” They all giggled and entered the classroom. Mrs. Johnson was waiting.
