The Alaska Native Regional Corporations (ANCSA) and the Native corporation system
The Alaska Native Regional Corporations (ANCSA) and the Native corporation system have been good for Alaska Natives. There are several examples of activities by the organizations have had a positive impact on the people living in Alaska and experts believe that the corporations may have a more significant impact in the future. For example, the organizations are sources of employment to the natives. The corporations are rated among the largest employers in the region. The corporations also own large enterprises within and outside the state that earn Alaska more revenue. Moreover, several Alaska Native corporations have partnered with Alaska resource industries in development projects across the state. As a result, more jobs are created, the rate of development in the region is high, and the economy has improved significantly. Alaska is now rated highly among the most developing states in the 21st century.
The passage of ANCSA was contingent on several historical events. Among the factors that influenced the formation of the corporations was World War II. The war led to the influx of military troops such as the Native Territorial Guard Units causing a significant increase in population in the region. Construction of military bases also enhanced Alaska’s economic growth. Another important historical event that promoted the passing of ANCSA was the completion of the Alaska-Canadian Highway that connected Alaska to the outside world. The road encouraged tourism and promoted the freight industry. The most severe historical event that prompted the passage of ANCSA was ALEUTS, which was as a result of relocations. The Natives were mobilized into the ATG to defend the country. The factors combined to cause a prosperous economy in Alaska and thus the congress considered forming the organization to provide a way in which Alaska Natives could have economic benefits from the corporations.
