I agree with the student’s claim that a reference group affects the perception of self. The student identifies relevant comparison factors that are race and social status. Shawn explains with great articulation of instances where he did not feel “white” or “black” enough while in college. However, the student does not identify these instances and what exactly made him think he was segregated. For example, the student could have mentioned discriminatory acts in the college, such as racial slurs or even bullying acts. Mainly, this would have created a better picture of how reference groups affect self-perception, mainly due to race.

Shawn identifies the factors that helped him find a reference group that he could associate with that is similar life experiences and the need to fit in. Notably, stating examples of these experiences would have better enhanced the understanding of the reader. Shawn exhibits weakness in grammar and proper sentence structure. It is, therefore, essential that you check on grammar before submitting your work.

Terry identifies reference groups that positively impacted his life from childhood that is his parents and close friendships. I like how terry explains ways in which close friendships and good parenting have affected his life. The articulation of how each factor played their role, for instance, close friendships, provided encouragement and support while good parents instilled a good work ethic in him. Such statements enhance the reader’s understanding of how reference groups impact an individual’s self-esteem.

Terry’s conclusion wraps the text correctly. He gives his sentiments backed with relevant evidence, thus showing an exceptional understanding of the influence of reference groups. Terry also exhibits excellent grammar skills and proper sentence structure hence improving readability and recognition by the readers.
