WW1 Posters Analysis

Question 1

Posters were used as a means of communication during world war 1. They provided multiple points of view to the participating countries, such as inspiring, persuading, and informing to understand the global conflict. Moreover, all the posters were designed with different styles by well know designers. Recruitment was not a pressing need in some countries, but posters were created persuading people to purchase bonds and raise funds to finance the war. Those people not enlisted in the military were asked to subscribe to war loans or purchase bonds. The ‘halt the Hun’ U.S. Government Bonds Liberty Loans inspired people to purchase loans to save their life from the Hun. Hun represented German soldiers that invaded Europe (poster 1). It shows an American soldier holding his arm, aiming to help a woman from being harmed by another soldier. The soldiers asked the people not enlisted to the military to purchase the bonds so that the ‘Hun can spare them.’

Question 2

Women were presented in the poster to show the role of a woman during the enlisted period (poster 8). The poster shows a man shaking a woman’s hand and on the side of her son, which indicates the son’s enlistment in the U.S Navy during the war. Also, women are seen as a symbol (poster 7) shows that women were not expected to be on the front line during the war. They were kept away from the direct conflict, although they treated as valuable assets when enlisting men to the Navy soldiers. The saying “I wish I were a man” was effective in encouraging men to be strong. But on the poster was a woman who was worth fighting. Women were also represented as a symbol (poster 3) shows an ape-like with a helmet and carrying a helpless woman. This was symbolic that women used to show the strong military since they were not strong and were helpless during the war.

Another similarity is that on most of the posters, women are used as a symbol either used to show how women were used to helping enlist men to the navy military. The 7th and 8th posters show a similarity between women’s efforts to participate in the war. On the anther hand, the 7th and 8th posters do not display any persuasion of buying bonds or subscribing to loans.

The purchase of bonds and subscription of loans indicated a form of progressive during the war. Also, they were used to warn on specific instances, such as showing strong soldiers (poster3). Women getting involved in enlisting men to the Navy soldiers was an idea that showed a progression towards defeating the enemies.

Question 5

The creel committee relied much upon the world war one poster. The committee intended to influence the public to support the government by distributing information through the use of the poster. They provided several public speakers, bonds selling events, making and publishing posters to help the war progress. Posters make immediate visual and quick impressions to the target audience, as compared to print media such as articles and pamphlets. Compared to the other printed media, the size and flexibility of the posters also make them be an excellent and affordable means of communication.
