Madame Mallory

the success of Hassan Hai as the main character in the story is indisputable. the author seems to facilitate the development and continuity of the story. there are, however, other characters who influence the character portrayed by the main character Hassan, through these other characters, the author facilitated the development of the character of Hassan. additionally, they are instrumental in depicting various subjects and elements in the story. the character, Madam Mallory, is significant in this sense as she does not only facilitate the development of the story but also significantly influences the character of Hassan.

the first depiction of Madame Mallory in the story is that she is a high tempered tyrant woman with a significant level of control over life. her tough nature is, however, unsustainable, and she is significantly adversely affected by the adverse conditions she faces.  through the story, there is the assertion of the improvement of her fragile nature.  the story portrays her as significantly influencing the main character. she has the role of the main driving force towards the development and the success of Hassan in his career.

character analysis

the presentation of the character of Mallory, the book, is as being significantly strange and dry.  she has a personality that is difficult to understand, in addition to being scary. her emotions are much hidden, and it is impossible to determine her feelings. she is depicted as a bully with whom someone would not want to stand against.  to be creepily staring at Hassan. following the arrival of the Hajji’s and setting up their restaurant, she presents the main threat that they face as she has a restaurant that already owns a restaurant.

having grown up and been bred in the best French test and tradition, the competition that she gets is real and threatening.  the Hajis are new into the country from India and not well informed of the traditions and practices, Madame Mallory, on the other hand, is s a native of the area, consequently well compliant with the region.  her upbringing gives her an upper hand in the region. as a measure to defeat the Haji’s in business, she seeks to use intimidation to scare the Hajis away for her to remain as the dominant restaurant owner. faced with the increased need to compete and defeated Hasan, she geta fusions following the realization that the cooking skills of Hassan are from a talent that he has and that she cannot defeat the talent.

following the incident where her manager left her at an old chapel to freeze, she undergoes a profound transformation. She realizes she needs to assist Hassan in the venture of reaching his potential. despite eventually being less nasty, she is still significantly intense. though out the story, she rarely engages in conversations, in addition to the fact that she also does not give compliments.  in this sense, despite having secretly monitored and natured the career of Hassan, she is not willing to admit it.

also, she gets to the point where she is eventually not self-centered and self-consumed but could instead take the time to realize the feelings of others. The passage elaborates on this factor by explaining that: “You could see it in her face. For if there was one human condition that Madame Mallory understood, it was jealousy, the intense pain of realizing that there are those in the world which is greater than we are, surpassing us, in some profound way, in our accomplishments”. (12.191-192)

 the depiction of the theme of envy is through the use of Madame Mallory in the story. initially, she was the sole restaurant owner in the area with no potential competition. her restaurant business, in her opinion, had become significantly significant as the restaurant was the three-star restaurant.  the lack of competition on the market was essential in ensuring that she remained high in demand.  initially, she had considered herself the best cook in the area without the potentiality of a competition.  the beliefs of Madame Mallory significantly got affected following the establishment of a new restaurant in the area. the envious aspect is past evident by way of the introduction of Madam Mallory into the story. through her introduction, she is seen peeping at Hassan. the envy that she felt drove her to a point where she sought to spy on the owners of the new restaurant.  she is in disbelief on the set up of another restaurant that could potentially provide competition to her business is being set up.  although her standards and quality of work had led to her celebration as a talented chef, she suffered from envy.  her envious nature further made other individuals also suffer from envy and the lack of confidence regarding personal decisions.  her envious actions led to her attempts in seeking to shut down the business venture that she viewed as a threat to her business. following the opening of a restaurant   By Abbas opposite the road across from her famous inn restaurant, she felt frustrated by the situation. She sought to close down the opponent’s business.  bin essence, she made an attempt to get into the restaurant established by Abbas with the claim that the authorities had no right letting abbas destroy her street.  she got furious and frustrated in her efforts. As a  result, she went to e extent of confronting Abbas for opening a restaurant near hers, through her efforts]. She sought to be the only restaurant operator in the street. the envious aspect was further frightened by the realization that Abbas enjoyed a reasonable amount of success, she got increasingly envious. her increased anger got to the point that she ended up making life and the working conditions unbearable for her entire staff and workforce. what led to Her envious nature was further heightened by the realization that that Hassan, in his cooking, relied on individual talent, a factor that made him a highly skilled cook.  eventually, when she overcame his envious nature, she as able to use her cooking skills for the best cause. she managed to assist Hassan to perfect his cooking skills.e Also, she was understanding of her envious workers.

the character, Madame Mallory, is among the main characters in the book, her role is essential in facilitating the understanding of bot the content of the book and the development of the main character. The promotion of the understanding is by the fact that she was envious of other businesses. she also developed the main character through the depiction of the importance of cooking which the main character
