Lust
Love and lust are considered synonymous and are often confused in most cultures worldwide. While love is primarily a mental and spiritual feeling towards someone or something, lust is entirely a physical need. In the modern world, most youth often confuse the physical emotion of lust as an attraction founded on genuine feelings that originate from the soul and heart to be an affection of love towards a person. As such, the existing body of literature shows that, while love needs commitment and discipline, lust does not require the manifestation of attributes like commitment and discipline. This ideology has been the basis for the debate about lust. While proponents of lust argue that lust does not need any commitments such as marriage, creates the motivation to be sexual and that with lust an individual can own their sexuality; critics against lust argue that lust does not inspire positive emotions such as friendship, peace, joy, and serenity and that it does not support commitment and the institution of marriage. The first argument in favor of lust upholds the fact that it is beneficial for people who need passion and excitement. Lust does not require commitment related to marriage life. In other words, lust is considered better than love among individuals who are looking for “no strings” attached relationships. It manifests itself in individuals who want to chase a passionate physical connection or chemistry. According to Walansky (1), lust is for people who are in quest of chemistry among people who do not want to waste time planning on building a life or future with the individual. This implies that lust focuses on the satisfaction of a person’s self-physical need, including sexual desires. Therefore, lust does not involve any commitments whereby individuals seek passion and excitement from each other. Nonetheless, this does not necessarily mean that one cannot get excitement from love. Instead, love requires a significant amount of work, effort, and commitment.
Second, proponents of lust claim that it creates a sense of motivation among the individuals involved. Walansky (1) states that sexual arousal or lust is strongly correlated to motivation compared to love. The motivation associated with love generates from the excitement people have about meeting each other and sharing the jokes or visiting new places. In contrast to love, being in a lustful relationship creates some freedom in which the partners are strongly motivated to discover new things, places, and ideas together due to the lack of commitment. On the other hand, advocates for lustful relationships assert that lust pushes one to own their sexuality, which in turn makes having sex more satisfying and passionate.
On the contrary, critics against love bring out strong arguments whereby they claim that feelings of love also provide excitement among individuals (Lanceaksh 1). They further argue that, despite lustful relationships providing individuals with such excitement, without commitment and discipline, there can never be satisfaction between each other. Moreover, the critics of lust claim that having discipline and commitment cannot allow an individual to hurt their partner either emotionally or physically. Furthermore, those against lustful relationships claim that love is fundamental to inspire positive emotions of friendship, joy, serenity, and peace among the partners (Lanceaksh 1). With such emotions, critics argue that an individual realizes significant progress in their life, whereas lust only inspires negative emotions.
In conclusion, both sides of the argument provide strong and valid arguments in support of their claims. Whereas those supporting lust argue that lustful relationships do not need any commitments such as marriage, creates the motivation to be sexual and that with lust an individual can own their sexuality; critics against lust argue that lust does not inspire positive emotions such as friendship, peace, joy, and serenity and that it does not support commitment and the institution of marriage. Therefore, from the analysis of both sides, it is evident that the positive side provides a comprehensive argument in support of lust.
