1. Casa Myrna – Boston

Casa Myrna is an organization that provides shelter and supportive services to domestic violence survivors in and around Boston, Massachusetts. These services include advocacy, education and training, counseling, children’s services, housing assistance, and domestic violence awareness and prevention. The organization also runs a 24-hour toll-free domestic violence hotline.

2. Network Against Domestic Abuse

The Network offers assistance to individuals and families experiencing domestic violence. Services such as advocacy, counseling, support, education, outreach, and a 24-hour hotline are provided by the Network. There are also specialized services for domestic violence in gay and lesbian relationships. The Network further runs a 15-bed emergency safe house for women and children in an undisclosed location.

3. REACH Beyond Domestic Violence

REACH is a nonprofit organization based in Massachusetts that is focused on providing safety and support for victims of domestic violence. The organization’s services are a combination of intervention and prevention. Intervention offers survivors with the resources they need to achieve safety and independence, in addition to a 24-hour hotline and shelter. Prevention involves working with the community to foster healthy and safe relationships.

4. RESPOND Inc.

RESPOND is a domestic violence prevention agency that offers life-saving shelter, a crisis hotline, and support services for survivors of domestic violence. The organization works with survivors to deal with their immediate and long-term needs. RESPOND works with law enforcement to identify and intervene in high-risk domestic violence cases.

5. Harbor Communities Overcoming Violence (HarborCOV)

HarborCOV is an organization that provides safety and support services for people affected by domestic violence and abuse. The organization specializes in helping individuals experiencing additional barriers, such as economic, cultural, and language issues. HarborCOV’s comprehensive approach to domestic violence covers legal advocacy, education, housing, economic development, community awareness, and linguistically and culturally appropriate services.

National Resources for Domestic Violence Victims:

1. National Clearinghouse for the Defense of Battered Women

This resource and advocacy center offers services to victims of domestic violence who have been charged with crimes related to their experiences of violence. The organization works with victims who have been arrested, are facing trial, or have been imprisoned due to defending themselves from their abusers. Victims who were coerced into crime by their abusers may also receive services from the center. In addition to legal services, National Clearinghouse also raises public awareness of the complex issues facing victims of domestic violence.

2. Safe Horizon

Safe Horizon is the largest victim services nonprofit organization in the country. The organization has numerous shelters for domestic violence victims across the United States. The locations of the shelters are kept confidential for the safety of the residents. In addition to providing a safe place for victims, the organization offers counseling, legal services, case management, housing and employment assistance, and temporary childcare. Survivors who would like to access the shelters can reach the organization on their 24/7 domestic violence hotline.

3. The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army takes an extensive approach to help victims and survivors of domestic violence through a variety of services including, emergency and transitional shelters. The organization works with various shelters across the country to offer women and children a safe place to stay while on their journey towards recovery and independent living. In addition to shelter services, the Salvation Army also provides medical attention and mental and spiritual counseling.

4. The National Domestic Violence Hotline

The NDVH is a nonprofit organization that offers round the clock support for domestic violence victims through a confidential and toll-free hotline. Victims who call the hotline receive crisis intervention and educational and referral services, also, to support. The hotline supports over 200 languages and is part of the largest nationwide network of resources and programs dedicated to domestic violence.

5. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

The NCADV does not provide any direct services for survivors of domestic violence but is valuable in referring to other sources that cover a variety of needs. The coalition also supports other organizations working with victims and survivors of domestic violence. The NCADV leads, mobilizes, and works towards changing the conditions that foster violence. Holding offenders accountable for their actions is also part of the organization’s mission.
