The short film, ‘Rachel Rose Interview: Between Living and Non-living,’ analyses the film works of Rachel Rose with herself as the commentator. It shows a snippet of one of Rachel’s movies, followed by her explanation of her inspiration for making the movies. Another piece follows her account, showing where the story she tells fits in the film. The film shows Rachel’s diverse works from writing children’s stories to writing about space and architecture and the unique ideas used to integrate the living and non-living in the films.
The film shows the uniqueness of the making and delivery of Rachel’s films. It explores the personal contributions of Rachel to the ideas behind the making of her films. The split technique results in a seamless elucidation of the different types of films that she makes. As I watch the interview, it is clear what ideas influenced which movie. The placement of Rachel’s explanation between two snippets of her films made it easier for me to place her concepts and understand her films. For example, she explains that she uses a mixture of kitchen supplies on a plate to create space illusion. The following extract from her movie puts this idea in perspective as one would see the illusion.
The clarification of the concept of living and non-living is not vivid in the interview. One would only come to understand this concept later in the film, as Rachel explains what inspires her work. Rachel’s clarification of how she connects her idea of mortality and her movies. After making this co-relation from the film about glass architecture, one understands the concept of joining the living and non-living in the works of Rachel Rose. The film skillfully shows the exceptionality of Rachel’s work and her subtle but enchanting ways of connecting the living and the non-living.
