Research indicates that the US is among the world states that record a high degree of respiratory diseases such as lung infections, heart diseases, among others. In this light, the US Affordable Care Act has escalated the need for skilled respiratory therapists that will play roles in areas such as departmental managing, respiratory care specialist fields, case management, and research coordinators. With my degree as a registered respiratory therapist, I decided to enroll in masters of a respiratory therapy program to acquire advanced practice respiratory therapist skills and credentials.
Masters of Respiratory Therapy is the first recognized advanced practice for a clinical master’s degree in respiratory care in the whole US nation. The degree is designed to equip me as an advanced respiratory care practitioner with skills in clinical specialties in a broad operational setting. The program also assists in my long-term career goal as an advanced practice respiratory therapist. As a graduate of MRT, I will be legible to obtain accreditation for advanced practice in respiratory care, thereby allowing me to explore an expanded scope of practice. Accreditation offers to ensure consumer protection and enhances the profession of Respiratory Care alongside safeguarding it against compromise of educational quality. As an aspirant for the advanced practice respiratory therapist (APRT), the MRT program allows me to serve as a physician extender in fields like pulmonary medicine and clinical care. Additionally, the program provides extended professional growth chances, which the current respiratory therapy does not offer.
Currently, as a registered respiratory therapist (RRT), the master’s in respiratory therapy has enabled me to serve in adult critical care, neonatal, and pediatric intensive care. The MRT has also assisted me in playing roles like a pulmonary function therapist assisting doctors and physicians in treating cardiopulmonary disorders. With the increased interaction and integration of various issues in respiratory care, the program also prepares me as an RRT for practicing in my long-term goal as an advanced practice respiratory specialist. Master in respiratory therapy will enable me to acquire accreditation and licensure as an advanced practice respiratory care practitioner. This is in regard to the Commission on Accreditation For Respiratory Care (CoARC), which in collaboration with other regulatory bodies, establishes and maintains educational standards for advanced practice respiratory care programs. According to CoARC, eligibility for accreditation is determined by one being a graduate of a CoARC accredited entry into the Respiratory Care Professional Practice degree program from a recognized and accredited institution by CoARC. The organization also requires an individual to hold the Registered Respiratory Therapist credential before entering the APRT program.
In addition to that, through the program, I will acquire competence in areas such as cognition, skills, and behavioral aspects, which will ensure I can assess patients, plan and deliver high quality and cost-effective services to them. As an advanced practice respiratory therapist, I will be exposed to more responsibilities in the evolving respiratory care sector. For instance, I may work as an assistant physician and acquire more supervisory roles. The program also equips me with skills for research both in the labs and in the clinical practice. Moreover, the MRT program ensures I develop advanced practice as a clinical specialist in areas such as adult care neonatal critical care and cardiopulmonary diagnostic area. Furthermore, I will be in a position to deliver best practice in respiratory care by ensuring improvement in patient care outcomes and ensuring their safety as well. Also, the optimum allocation of resources in respiratory care will be my area of expertise. Likewise, I will be trained to provide diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive care across numerous settings in the healthcare spectrum.
From a personal perspective, my urge to assist in treating breathing difficulties is deeply rooted in my childhood. Watching my friends survive asthma attacks while others succumbed to them is a reason enough that prompted me to take a career in respiratory therapy. I felt the field required my determination and the skills I obtained in my education to assist in saving more lives claimed by these infections. Moreover, as a registered respiratory therapist, I believe it will be easy to achieve my goal as an advanced practice respiratory care practitioner. As an RRT, I have been exposed to a variety of areas in the respiratory field, such as pulmonary diagnosis, adult care, and gerontological care, which will enable gauge my way through as an APRT specialist. As a graduate in MRT, I am eligible to acquire the necessary credentials and licensure to operate as an APRT, as stipulated by the commission on accreditation for respiratory care. Also, the various skills and competencies acquired in my professional life as an RTT will help boost my performance as an advanced practice respiratory therapist.
I believe my career path as an advanced practice respiratory care specialist is attainable within the next few years. The apparent growth in respiratory service demand prompted this career goal. Also, the need to acquire more professional competence facilitated my decision to seek an advanced role in respiratory therapy. Through this career, my scope of work will be expanded, and my experience will be more vigilant. Additionally, as an advanced practice respiratory therapist, I will be exposed to more significant roles in the respiratory care spectrum that will increase my experience as well as boost my skills.
