Some of the preparations that can be done before and during the assignment to ease the repatriation process for the expatriate and spouse /family include pre-departure training, allowing for periodic returns, and mentorship. The pre-departure training can help the expatriate and his family with the knowledge on how to integrate into their home countries upon return. Allowing the expatriate and his spouse/family to make periodic returns during the assignment can help them catch up with the changing political and economic conditions (Konopaske et al., 2005, p. 417). Having a perspective of how things are transforming in the home country can enable the expatriate, and the family develop a realistic view of what to expect once they return home (Dowling et al., 2017, p. 191) The company can serve as a mentor to the expatriate by keeping him in touch with matters such as changes in power politics, changes in home personnel, strategic developments in the home country

The balanced sheet compensation approach will provide the expatriate with the capacity to maintain their home salary because that equalizes wages of the home country and the host country (Dowling et al., 2017, p.223)). The approach is advantageous because it ensures equity between employees, and it easy to communicate with the workers. (Dowling et al., 2017, p.223). Its disadvantages are that it can lead to disparities between expatriates and the local nationals and that it is complex to administer
