Introduction
Despite the many strict rules put in place by many learning institutions to curb cheating in examinations, many students still cheat. Most learning institutions all over the world offer examinations to students to assess their mastery of content. Schools, parents, and students use examinations as determinants in admission to colleges or jobs. Therefore, examinations rely on the achievement of higher grades and marks. Some students carry with them their lecture notes into the examination room, others consult with their friends, while others try to copy from their peers. The increase in exams cheating is due to wanting high grades, parents’ pressure, and allocating time for studying.
Reasons for cheating in examinations
Firstly, most students cheat to get high grades. Many institutions over-emphasize on getting good grades in class, rather than focusing on what else students can do best outside the classroom, pressuring students into cheating. For students who are grade-oriented, they will do anything possible to get good grades, even if it means cheating in exams (Batool et al., 2011). Also, most courses in tertiary institutions need a high GPA to attain admission, prompting most high school students to cheat to get a high GPA. Also, they fear to fail in their exams as it might lead to ridicule from their peers.
Another reason that contributes to cheating is the lack of preparedness (Batool et al., 2011). Some students never study and idle around school throughout the semester. They involve themselves in activities that are not beneficial to them, wasting all their study time. Some attend few to no classes and only show up during exams, with no content to tackle the questions. Others keep procrastinating their studies and only start studying a few days to the exams, leaving them with little time to master the content. Some students have bad study habits, such as cramming the course content, a very ineffective technique that can lead to forgetting of everything during the examination. Some other students do not take test assignments seriously and pay others to do them on their behalf; thus, they do not get to practice what they study in class before exams.
Lastly, students get a lot of pressure from parents to perform (Bachore, 2016). Most parents want their children to do well in school, even when they are not talented in their studies. They often compare their children amongst themselves and with those of their friends and relatives. Some parents also punish their children for not doing well in school and reward those who do well. Such pressure may prompt students to cheat in examinations to avoid punishment or get the rewards promised by their parents. Another reason may be the need to look smart before parents, thus receive all the praises, even though they are not well deserved.
Conclusion
Cheating in exams is rampant all over the world and needs to stop as most people get high grades and, thus, gain admission to tertiary institutions and jobs that others would have deserved. Most people that cheat in exams are usually grade-oriented and use whatever means possible, including cheating, to make sure that they get high grades. Also, most of them do not thoroughly prepare for exams, thus go into exam rooms with little or no content that prompts them to cheat. Parents put a lot of pressure on their children to do well, even in areas that they are weak in, making them resort in cheating.
Recommendations
There are several measures that all the stakeholders can put in place to curb cheating. For instance, schools should stop over-emphasizing high grades alone and also focus on extra-curricular activities that students are good at. Also, learning institutions should emphasize the need for attending classes and come up with measures to track class attendance. They should also come up with stringent rules that lead to the punishment of students that do not attend classes and those who cheat in exams (Bachore, 2016). By attending classes, the exam preparedness for students will increase, leading to a decrease in exam cheating behavior. Lastly, parents should refrain from putting a lot of pressure on their children to perform well. They should give them advice on the various subjects but refrain from certain behaviors such as threatening to ground them of they fail.
